How to escape a Dwarf Fortress
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:04:09 pm »

Quick cry for help... starting as a new adventurer in a game-made fortress, how do you get out?  I've been wandering convoluted halls and bedroom corridors looking for the main stairwell for ages now!  Does the minimap help?  How about asking people to lead you somewhere.. but where?

There's been occasional issues with NPC dwarf sites being totally inaccessible, you may have run into one of those, but keep in mind that NPC sites are generally mazes on par with the succession forts of legend.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

It'll be ramps moving in a square circular fashion that lead you out.

Stick to 3 wide corridors at the least, or maybe 2 in a pinch--1 wides almost always lead to dormitories which will be of no avail to you.

I have found that you have to go up and down stairs sometimes to find the central ramp. Also, not all dwarf fortresses lead to the surface, you may have to find an exit through a different fort on the underground travel map, which is quite confusing. I'm sure it's natural for a real dwarf, but for a human playing a dwarf it's like going through a maze blindfolded.
