Miners, Woodcutters, and Military?
« on: June 08, 2014, 08:04:01 pm »

I know that drafting Miners and Woodcutters cause uniform conflicts but recently I tried disabling the mining labor before drafting them in an emergency situation. Is this something that works all the time or did I just get lucky.

You avoided the uniform conflict by letting them put their Mining Pick or Woodcutting Axe back in stockpile before going on duty.

My understanding of the uniform conflict is that the Miner will NEVER use the same Pick for both mining and soldiering, and the same with the Lumberjack and his Axe. So a Miner that goes on duty while mining will run to the stockpile, put his pick back in stock, grab a different (but possibly identical) Pick, and then go on duty.

I know for a fact he didn't go to and from a stockpile. He was being chased by something then I turned off mining, drafted him and order him to kill what was chasing him. I think the combat log had him using his pick but I don't remember for sure but I do know he did not drop it.

Dwarfs put under military orders _while they're aware of a nearby danger/foe/target_ will deal with the threat as first priority. This specific case overrides normal prioritising which is "fix my inventory" - stash/drop the job tool/weapon and go to collect standard military equipment before doing any soldiering. Drafting a miner who's currently chased around by a troglodyte leads to the miner wrecking the troggo's day with their pick more often than not. If the miner currently can't see the troglodyte, they'll instead drop their pick and go on a one-week journey to pick up military supplies.
