not as missing as they think
« on: May 30, 2014, 06:17:50 pm »

I've got everything set up in some temporary hallways, while the main shape of the fort is being dug out.

In one of these main, highly trafficked thoroughfares, i've got some hospital beds.

I happen to notice a dead fish cleaner in one of said hospital beds.  "funny" I think, I dont remember getting an announcement.  Ah well, I build a coffin.. and.. nothing.   no hauling.

A while later, I get a message that he has been missing for over a week.  Dwarfs are walking right by him.  Someone went to sleep in the bed right next to him.

My world is only 102 years old, and most of my dwarfs are 60-80, so many of the usual detection methods dont apply.  regardless, i'm less concerned with finding the vampire than I am with taking care of this stupid corpse.  Any ideas?

There are couple of things you can check to sort out the mystery, if you haven't done so already.
If it's a murder (despite all its horrors, dwarf healthcare does not count), it should appear as a crime in the justice screen.
If the dwarf got wounded via a fight with an inanimate object, it should still appear in the combat logs - chances are if your fort is busy early on he may have fallen victim to neglect \ infection - The chief medical dwarf is about as reliable as the broker in a crisis.

No, definitely a vampire -- it got someone else previously.  When I had them tumble the bed they realized the fishcleaner didnt have any blood, and it then appeared on the crime list.

Not sure why no one noticed the body when they kept walking right by.

My number one suspect is the melancholy metalcrafter who failed his mood.  Most everyone else I have seen evidence of them sleeping, eating, or drinking.  There are a couple suspects with siblings though... Can Vamps have siblings or spouses if the world is young enough?

Melancholy dwarves won't eat or drink. I'd expect the same to be true for vamps, though I've never had one lose its marbles. When feeding, vamps get an 'on break' job, and insane dwarves don't take any jobs, I think, including breaks. So if you see your melancholy dwarf on break I guess that would solve your mystery and disprove my hypothesis.

Vamps can go mad from depression. My current fort has an immortal foaming at the pointy toothed mouth loony walled up in what used to be a prison cell.

Personally, I say just lock him up somewhere and wait to see what happens. At the very worst you lose a suicidal Urist who'll be replaced with the next migrant wave.

wasn't the mopey guy.  ID'd two others though, which may be the total of all the cursed dwarfs in my civ - at least according to the gods on the relationship lists I've seen.

Well, these two and a weresquirrel whom has not shown up yet.

that is what you get for building in temporary hallways, might well be that section has shifted out and people passing buy see that fish cleaner still alive sleepin'.
on a side note, i know DF is complicated and all but could you explain how to build temporary structures, seems intriguing ...

Maybe my poor writing.  What I mean is this:

I dig out some basic hallways - in this case one long area that will eventually be a grand entrance ramp.  While the rest of the for is still being dug and smoothed,  I put some beds and stockpiles in this area, and zone a few squares to be a hospital.

Eventually, the beds will be relocated to bedrooms and the piles moved to permanent locations.

All vamps were born as normal dwarves so they have siblings and spouses and children like every other dwarf

Yes, but can they migrate to the fort with them, or do those relationships become estranged when they become night creatures?

Someone posted elsewhere that he had a married vamp couple, so that might answer that.
