Or we could just make some armored light vehicles or tanks that would actually be useful in the forest, where we'll be doing most of our fighting and assaulting.

-1 to hovercraft.

-1 more to hovercraft.

I'd advocate for something along the lines of the Stryker. Our version would have 8 wheels, weigh around 15 tons, 3 crew (driver, commander, gunner), room for 8 passengers, enough armor to stop any nasties the aliens might throw at us, and be armed with a fully enclosed ~ 20mm autocannon turret or .50 caliber minigun. We don't want the bastards ripping off the turret hatch and eating the gunner, and we want to be shooting something powerful enough to go through undergrowth, trees, and alien carapaces.

+1 But.. We already have personnel carriers. Maybe we should consider making these dedicated combat vehicles? If we cut the space for personnel the added speed would make them a lot deadlier. Or we could replace the weight with some added gun.

Oh yeah, didn't see those. They're big enough that they might have trouble in a forest, though. Regardless, retrofitting them with a light autocannon or some kind of Gatling-type machine gun would be a good idea.

No that's not what I meant. I meant altering the proposed craft to be a light and fast dedicated strike vehicle. A six-wheeler perhaps, to preserve mobility over rough terrain while keeping the weight low, with an enclosed 20mm as you said.

Spoiler: Like This (click to show/hide)
Except heavier and with some less vulnerable wheels that are evenly spaced, since rolling is likely a concern.

The APCs have already been confirmed to be a bad idea to use directly in combat. It couldn't hurt to upgrade the guns on them though.

Oh, yeah, that would work well for stuff like patrols

Mhmm. Hit and run tactics. The ants are fast, but legs can only move you so quick. They can face away from an anticipated assault with the turret reversed, shooting accurately while outrunning them.
