As a newer player, I tend to Nickname all my dwarves based on the job/jobs I want them doing.  Military dwarves get named "Marks", "Swords", "Axes" etc...  My Master masons get named "Masons".  It's not fun really, but it helps keep me organized when I started to hit that 90+ population.  Sometimes I have so many Dwarves that I get overwhelmed and don't know what to do next.  I worry that if I make to big of a military squad, I'll use someone who I need for more important things, hence the naming scheme.

That being said, Game of Thrones names seems a good way to go.

I tend to only name my legendary dwarves, and base them on whatever theme is in mind when the first one gets there.

Lately, it's been various ancient pantheons - Hammerlord captain is Thor, Leg. Furnace Op is Hephaestus, top hunter is Diana, etc.

Generally, though, I find it sufficient to name professions for everyone else.  Except my squaddies, who tend to be 'Fodder.'
