What's a broodling?

A trader has a broodling cage for sale. I looked this up, and I found this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=127707.325;wap2

Broodlings are baby birds, right? I'm confused, because it seems like they're baby birds that can somehow breed, and the baby-babies change species and turn into dorfs. Waaaaat I'm so confused.

Please someone clarify before I throw a tantrum and go stark raving mad.

They are just slime mold creatures... that give birth replicas of the dwarfern people but are incomplete and are treated as slaves and cannon fodder from the true dwarf people.

They're a VERY old feature of Masterwork. I remember seeing them in the changelogs for Masterwork V1 or V2. They make dwarves. They've pretty much been replaced with the new spawnunit scripts.

Profile> Modify Profile> Look and Layout> Current Theme> (change)> Darkling

That's so weird. Reminds me of the game Insaniquarium, where special breeder fish produce regular fish.

Actually, thats Broodlords and Broodmothers. Broodlings were based on that and were intended for Warlock mode... that they are still in the raws was a mistake. sorry ^^
