Like about any other race, i'm indifferent. I love their exotic animals, but I hate that they won't accept wood. And humans are just outright annoying, I've never seen anything useful from them. Only race I really like are the Dwarfs. The rest can die in fiery pits far as I care. :P Once I get enough exotic animals that is.

With my next fortress, I'm going to have a bridge that shall make dealing with any invaders as easy as pulling a lever to make them fall, and pulling another lever to drown any survivors.
And I shall be regarding Elven caravans as invaders.

Honestly I didn't have a problem with elves. They brought wood and cloth, which were the goods I needed the most. Then I started playing Masterwork and had a few kobold and warlock settlements killed by the mithral-armed elves in that mod. Now I go out of my way to kill pathetic vanilla elves in vengeance for the settlements their alternate universe selves destroyed. I have REASONS for elf-butchering.

Honestly, elves are crucial for my current game. I'm embarked in a tundra with a thin soil layer and no coal. My voracious appetite for wood has so far only been fulfilled with the help of elven traders. Elves also bring you seeds you couldn't otherwise get for above-ground plants and can bring emergency medical supplies (cloth, crutches, splints...) in times of need.

IMO it's more annoying to kill them than put up with their 1 short joke a year. As long as diplomacy is turned off and they don't declare war on you for tree cutting, they really aren't worth caring about. The sociopathy that goes into running a fort tends to cut down on ones bigotry.

I consider myself a part of the casual elf hater crowd. I'll more readily kill an elf than a goblin, though perhaps that is because I know goblins actually have a more similar moral compass to Dwarves than Elves. Goblins try to rescue your children, Elves try to eat them.

My attitude towards elves is "Don't start nothin', there won't be nothin'." In other words, as long as they bring good booze, brewable plants, cloth, and cool tame animals, they can expect me to be a good trading partner. And since I've modded a good amount of stuff into my game, they bring a nice array of trade goods.

If only they'd stop bringing me wooden weapons and armor. What am I supposed to do with those? They of all people should know dwarves use metal and stone for weapons and armor, not wood!

Good enough excuse to pull the water lever.
Water lever because you can get the booze if they drown rather than burn.

I'll admit, I wouldn't go mass-murdering elves when running a fortress. The animals are very nice to have around and the seeds and booze can help too. Of course, if they declare war, I'll happily start cutting them down and leaving them tied to posts naked next to the animals I traded for earlier.

While on my own, I like to use their quests to find myself enemies and points of interests in the area. Of course, if I accidentally need their blood or one of my raised underlings decides to attack them, I'll have no hard feelings.

Naturally, exporting lead crafts is still the most preferred way to handle them. They take my -potentially hazardous- junk, I take their cool stuff.
An exceptionally bad joke or poor speechcraft will of course lead me to forcing them to surrender their goods as compensation. One way or another.

In one of my latest forts i traded extensively with the caravans. I almost didnt make food or booze, buy everything. I bought all their food, booze, wood and cloth.

However at some point the elves stopped bringing so much stuff, like just 3 barrels of booze and 5 bin of cloth. You call that a caravan?
Also, despite i wasnt cutting any trees (because there werent many in the map) the elven diplomat would come every year to bitch about trees.

Those elves had it coming.

after three years of no exotic animals i killed all the elven merchants and there beasts.  All but one merchant he will be the one to relay the message. He will remember, and he will learn to fear our  War Chickens
