Babycare/nursery labor
« on: May 02, 2014, 08:26:46 pm »

I hate it when my melee dwarfs carry their babies to a battle and have them killed. Is there any way I can mod in a new activity zone (nursery) and labor (babycare)? I know it's probably a lot harder than it sounds, but I am so sick of risking a tantrum spiral every time I send my spear dwarfs to go kill something.

You can't add new labors and you can't add new activity zones. You can't add anything that would serve the same purpose either. My suggestion is to make sure your military doesn't get married or use men for your military. Though you might be able to assign babies to burrows which might keep them there. Also this isn't the right place to ask this question it would be more fitting to ask it in general modding.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

you "can" make a baby flusher with a water trap and fortifications, otherwise known as an unfortunate accident. with high chances of baby drowning or starvation. or just don't put females in the military.

can babies be hospitalized for wounds the same way adults can?

perhaps the key is to have a hospital and somehow mod babies to have wounds that deal no damage and keep them bedbound until they're children.

No. However I've had quite a few babies die from wounds gained from the traps in the training room my military dwarves use, so there's an option if you're looking for unfortunate accidents.

Toady should definitely put in babycare and nurseries. I get lots of female dwarfs who are great for military service, and even if they weren't, I'd still be cutting my available manpower in half. If I wanted the babies to die then I'd just send them out to get slaughtered by goblins like they do already. I don't want a military dwarf to go on a murderous rampage because her little crying monster got killed.

dead babies dont cause tantrum spirals, because they cannot socialize and gain friends. They will cause a SINGLE unhappy thought in direct relatives (mom and dad, not sure about brother and siste), BUT its not as big of an unhappy thought as losing a pet, or spouse, or close friend.

edit: checked the wiki.
Lost a (friend/pet/family member) [to tragedy] recently.    -50/-30/-20/-10

a -50, is a pretty big hit to happiness, but its to very few dwarves. (babies dont make friends). But at the same time, military dwarves tend to get used to death. End result, dont be afraid to let your mother dwarf take the babies into battle to use as bludgeoning tools in the fight =P, just make sure the CHILD dwarves are stuck inside, in a burrow, so they cant follow mom out to get killed.

You could move baby-carriers to a separate squad and not send them into battle.  As long as the equip they get includes any weapon they will still train weapon skills and the babies might* even gain skill from watching any demonstrations.

*I haven't done or read any !SCIENCE!, but I'm pretty sure it works with children.

If it could be modded, I would have long done so. I dont know of a way this could be done.
