Uh, this is insanely useful!

Any kind of expensive furniture acts as a lure for building destroyers, who then cannot destroy it as it is an artifact, thus letting you gradually impale them with spikes or whatever. Including clowns if done correctly!
And a piece of furniture which can be lever linked to change routes!!! Way way better.

A floodgate is not as good as a hatch (zero lever lag time for hatches) which is not as good as a door (instant overseer-controlled access), but together, these three and similar things like bars and grates are by far the most useful artifacts you can possibly get in my opinion.  Weapons by comparison are crap -- whoopdeedoo, you get a weapon with some small bonus to it and can kill all the same things 15% faster, so what? Artifact mechanized gates let you do whole fortress projects and goals that would be impossible otherwise.

A minecart might be pretty cool too.

Cauliflower Labs – Geologically realistic world generator devblog

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

my fort has an artifact wood floodgate that I used to lure demons during the great siege. unfortunately, It got set on fire and won't stop burning, and I can't move it anywhere.

It's nice to have a smoke generator and all, but I prefer it to be near the surface for easy accessibility, rather than at magma sea level.
