do nonliving nonzombie items suffer fall damage?

more specifically, if i dump a yak skeleton down the same pit meant for caged invaders, will it explode into a pile of yak bones?

Nope. You could drop glass boxes down 30 z-levels and they'd still be intact. You'll just have to wait until the skeleton rots into bones, which can take awhile. See if your butchers will butcher it, though.

... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

i've played a good number of fortresses that lasted 50+ game yrs in which skeletons resulting from the first ambush never turned into bones. i am therefore of the belief that this never actually happens.

these are the skeletons of tame creatures killed by invaders. butchers won't touch them, a behavior which is beyond my comprehension.

Severed arms/legs from sufficiently large creatures will eventually rot into bones.  But these limbs must be severed while the creature is still alive.  Once you've got a corpse, you can't chop off parts any more.  And if it's a "tame" corpse (from a domesticated animal that died outside of the butcher's shop), there's not a damned thing you can do with it but atom-smash it.

Well, you could get your friendly neighborhood necromancer to reanimate it, then chop it's limbs off. In fact, due to a bug, reanimated critters provide bonus bacon when butchered.
