Dwarf sparring
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:55:59 pm »

I just created a four man squad, gave them a few wooden training swords, and set up a big room as barracks with the training option on.  All of them train individually, but they don't want to seem to train in pairs.  Why could this be?

Also, just killed a globin thief, and he left a few things on the ground, but my dwarves seem to ignore them and not pick them up.  Anything I have to do so they loot the corpse?

Do they show up as civilians or as soldiers? If the former, make sure you've actually given them an order to Train.

As for the goblin thief you killed, items carried by invaders tend to be forbidden by default, so you'll need to reclaim them before your dwarves will touch them.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

They have training scheduled, but they're inactive.  How do I order them to train?

it works better if you put them in 2 squads of two, but it's still just a random chance whether they'll spar or not, in most cases they just end up doing "individual combat drill" or dodging/fighting/whatever demonstration.  Leave them for a year or so and you should see at least moderate skill gain.  Training by sparring works best if you start early, i.e. with two dwarves from your initial embark, so that by the time full size armies show up they should be legendary in a few skills.
also you don't need to equip training weapons, there is literally no chance of a dwarf getting hurt in sparring, and if you need your squad to run somewhere quickly, either they'll have to bash the enemy down with sticks or delay to change equipment.

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

Select the squad in the (s)quads menu, then hit t (I think) to change their current state from inactive to training.
