Nearly got trampled by a car
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:36:47 am »

.Happened to me just about 20 mins before I posted this, around 15:10.
I'm going home from school, having a good old chat with my friend about...I dont know, cant remember that now somehow.
Anyways we are crossing the road at our usually spot still talking, I was wearing a hood and we stopped at the middle waiting for the left lane to stop or get empty.
So this black lady in a red car starts stopping and we decide its save to pass.BUT her car is just rolling...And poor me in my hood can't see this.My friend quickly jumps back and I am like WTF and figuring something is wrong so I just JUMP back as the tire starts driving along my feet were it seems to want to come to a stand still...Luckily I still have my feet undamaged but a bit sore from jumping back.
And the road conditions weren't even that bad.It was raining at around 12:00 and by now the road was pretty dry...
Makes you think about car tests and how safe are their brakes and tires.
Anyways I just said I'm okay after like 5 people were asking me if I'm alright and a couple cars pulling over and asking me over and over again if I'm ok.
I was more worried about my MP3 to tell you the truth since it fell out of my pocket. Also one more thing...This infact hurt less than a accident I had when I was mountain climbing and twisted my foot really badly.Could'nt walk for a week after that.
Anyways let me wait for the adrenaline boost to go away before deciding if I should get this checked out...

Well crap. If you can still walk, then your foot-bones are probably okay, though if I were you, I would still get it checked out. Word to the wise - usually, hoods while it's not raining are a pretty bad idea, because a lot of stuff like this happens. People have peripheral vision because they need it.

Reminds me of that time when I was roller-skating and nearly got run over by a jeep. We have those traffic lights that show how much time is left until it switches. So I'm going pretty fast, and the light is red, but ET until green is like, three seconds. And I think I'm gonna arrive there just as it switches. Sure enough, I'm there just as it finishes counting...but it doesn't switch. So I do a half-flip half-spin thing and land on my butt just centimeters from a passing jeep. God bless acrobatics.

I hope you got the driver's information. If you need to pay for medical stuff relating to this, even if it's just a checkup, you shouldn't have to be the one paying for it. Also generally a punishment to her in the form of higher car insurance rates because she hit a pedestrian might make her a more careful driver in the future, possibly saving someone's life.

Huh, yea, would have to see if the brakes on the car needs to be fixed or not first before ya jump to conclusions, good on ya for that at least.  At least if it is the fault of the brakes, it is not malicious.
Taking myself as a base example, some people probably do not maintain their vehicles well...

Doesn't matter if it was malicious. She has a duty as a driver to not run into stuff. The burden on the pedestrian may vary by jurisdiction, but in my state if you hit a pedestrian you're pretty much screwed. Even if they're jaywalking, if they run out into the road suddenly from between parked cars, etc. It's hard to prove otherwise and everyone's gonna side with the pedestrian because he got injured and you just got a dent on your bumper.

If her brakes don't work, she shouldn't drive until they're fixed. And no, she wasn't "on her way to the garage" to have them fix her brakes. 99% of the people you see driving around illegally because something is broken are not on their way to have it fixed. And if she does drive anyway, it's her fault if she runs into someone because she has bad brakes and evidently no emergency brake.

You do not want to live in a place where drivers are protected and pedestrians are on their own.

Nearly got hit 2 days ago also, was going through a T intersection on bike and had a green light, so I go through at a good pace, then I hear a speeding car on my right. I just had time to slam the brakes and avoid the incoming car. Still not sure if the light changed really fast without me noticing or the guy just ran on the red light. I suspect he anticipated the green and just got at the light as it was switching so never stopped, and I happened to be still crossing. Is it just me or the yellow are now on for a lot less time than the used to.

Eh, who even knows that they have an emergency brake on their car?  Or where it is?
Yea, I agree the blame is still on her for not maintaining the car.  I'm just saying, some people are pretty poor at maintaining their vehicles... and won't be arsed to do anything about it till they gotta do it.

It is what it is.

Hard to justify not seeing you I think...  unless it is night and you are in dark clothing and your bike doesn't have reflectors.

Yeah, yellows are too short. A study from 2004 said that 40% of collisions could be prevented by making yellow lights a second longer. Just one second.

I suspect the collisions it describes are caused by (1) people speeding through the yellow trying to beat the red because GOD DAMN IT IF I'M GONNA JUST MISS IT, and end up actually still in the intersection when their light changes to red, and (2) drivers anticipating the green and stampeding through the intersection without waiting for it to clear.

Usually there's a brief moment where all the lights in the intersection are red, before opening up the next phase.

The other day I was driving along and just barely made it through a yellow before it turned red. I saw the opposite yellow turn red in my rear-view mirror. And also saw three other cars following me in my lane passing through the intersection against a red light. They knew they wouldn't make it but didn't care.

Seems to happen much more often in the cities for me.  Or maybe its cause there are way more stop lights in a city...  Yea.

Some stoplights are really stupidly placed in my city, like when a 40 mph artery (the only street getting out of 4 neighborhoods) gets stopped for one car to turn left off a residential street. I've seen people straight up ignore them, since they also typically allot ~40-50 seconds too much time for one person turning, and there are 3 of them in a row over 4 blocks (sometimes I hit all 3). There's also a stop sign on another 40 mph road nearer to the university, hilariously enough. I'd imagine that bad drivers would still run them even if they weren't idiotically placed, but it's still annoying as hell. Most other places people turning left just need to wait and yield, and I've never seen more than one car utilize it.

There are intersections in the town where I live where you can't enter traffic during peak hours because the road fills up with cars waiting for the next light, and when the light changes and they go, more cars arrive behind them. You hope someone is nice enough to stop and let you in (which doesn't happen because the people behind them honk like jackasses) or slowly die of starvation in your car.
