Selling a large collection of MTG cards, advice?
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:57:53 pm »

I'm thinking of selling my old MTG cards as I don't really use them any more and they take up a fair bit of space.  I was thinking of selling the whole thing as one big set of cards(between 3000-4000 cards), but I'm not really sure how to price things, in particular for the more common stuff.  I can find prices of some of my high-price cards no problem, but trying to figure out how much my "Dark Rituals" and such is kinda hard.

Right now I've been working on making a list of everything I've got.  Does anybody have any advice on estimating the collections worth?

I've mostly got cards from

Revised/4th edition(with some random unlimited edition cards floating around in there)
Legends
Dark
Fallen Empires
Homelands
Ice Age
Alliances
With a bit of Mirage and Visions.

I've also got some Antiquities and Arabian nights, but not much and mostly common stuff.

Arabian nights/antiquites cards might fetch a decent price, but all the other editions you mentioned are sadly of very low value. There are barely any tournament-worthy cards, maybe a hymn to tourach, and thats it.

What I think would be best ist to sell them in smaller, random packs, and hope that people buy them for more than they are worth, in the hope of a good find. Otherwise selling the entire batch is of course much less hassle.

Speaking from experience here, I sold my 10,000 card collection a few years ago.

Hum, interesting.  I am pretty big on the no-hassle, but the random packs thing kind of sounds like a good idea.  I do have one Tabernacle at Pendrel Vale card that is apparently worth a lot, so maybe people would pay for a chance at that card.  How many cards per pack?

Of the low-value cards, is there an average price?  Like 5 cents per card or something?

You'll want to single out the cards that are worth something. Some are worth hundreds. As for the rest, just dump them for a low price on whomever is willing to buy.

I'd suggest going through the above links, picking out the valuable cards, then going to a tournament and talking to people.

Be on the lookout for any Force of Will's in your Alliance set, worth around 100$. It's also uncommon so you might have a few if you're lucky!

Sorry, forgot about those. Yes, they are quite neat. Mishras Workshop or a Library of Alexandria or a Juzam Djinn are also more pricey.
