I'm usually just a little below the surface like most people here.  I usually build a few things above ground, which sometimes morphs into a semi-megaproject (or full megaproject).

Not my current fort though, it is almost completely above ground in a series of domes.  The domes have both underground connections and enclosed walkways 1 z above the ground.  (I am currently slowly replacing all the stone blocks with clear glass...)

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

I usually dig out a tube fort as a starter fort. Then I try to find some nice unblemished layer stone, preferably multiple z levels deep. Then I dig out a grand ole entrance and such. So fun.

Depends on what I'm trying to do, or if I feel like something special. Most forts start in the second layer of stone (no dirt ceilings) and go a few levels until I get bored. Other times I've colonized the caverns, or just stayed above ground.
