Forget your mortal fears and be a true dwarf! run through the fire as if completely ignorant!

...But try to put yourself out in a pool afterwards.

what version are you running? Campfires are bugged in 34.01 AFAIK and will never go out. In 34.02 they should go out over the length of a night.

Can you alt-walk through a fire? I've never tried but I have a feeling you can't...

Ended up giving into starvation. Couldn't alt-walk through them, wait them out, or travel away.

I had this same problem, and after looking online for help figured a way out I thought I'd share. Use dfhack liquid to drop a block of water on the campfire, might have to wait a turn our two but it worked for me.

Sorry if this is considered bad form posting in such an old topic, from my own experience the info is still relevant.

I wonder if this is why there are no cavemen anymore.

The reason is, there's a bug that makes campfires underground never go out. Otherwise, they will if you wait long enough. But not underground. Best bet is DFhack and use "liquids" to create some obsidian floors... if you already have DFHack installed, anyway.

I died much the same way on one of my adventurers as he was resting off injuries of a deadly camel attack…

I was ignorant to the fact that lairs are pretty much safe and walled myself in.

I actually stumbled upon my own starved body at a later date, on a new adventurer. He was surrounded by hundreds of monkeys and desert/forest animals, and strangely enough there were hides of cave creatures lying about in bits of blood.

The eternal pyres still blaze. I presume that the animals see him as a God now.

I mean, it's not really that hard, is it? Anyone can wield a torch, it doesn't prove anything. Wearing flaming clothes on the other hand, or better yet, wearing nothing at all and being on fire... that is the essence of dwarfish behavior."
