No time for love, Dr. Jones!
« on: March 19, 2014, 06:26:57 pm »

Browsing through the wiki and I found the article on Marriage.  This makes me scratch my head, because in a dozen fortresses with plenty of married dwarves and babies, I have yet to see an announcement that a marriage has occurred.  Is there a setting that suppresses these messages that I'm missing somewhere?  Or a line in the INIT or D_INIT files?

From my experience, it only says that people get married if they're important.
The marriage of two farmers probably won't get an announcement (unless one was one heck of a solider beforehand and got crippled in battle), but the marriage of an appointed noble to a citizen (or another noble) probably will. If your fort lacks notable people, they'll still get married but the game will not mention it.

A lot of the time the parties that adults throw are, in fact, where they announce their marriages to the other Dwarfs.  So if two people are lovers and they attend the same party it may be their wedding.  At least, that is what I have been told.

Marriages in the fort are generally announced, there's no "not important enough to mention" parameter.

If dwarfs arrange a wedding reception, this takes place _after_ they married - they'll be listed as "husband" and "wife" respectively, not "lover".

The easiest way to get married dwarfs is by immigration. Dwarfs can and will immigrate with their whole family, i.e. spouse and children. If you have a lot of married dwarfs and haven't seen marriage notices, those were likely all immigrant couples.

I personally never saw a marriage announcement, until I started putting statues up.

If all you have is a dining room as your meeting hall, then it won't give announcements. If you have something like a statue garden, then it will.

Nope, they make wedding parties in the main hall all the time in my fortress, we don't have sculpture gardens.

I fall into the not getting messages camp. I've never ever seen a message about this sort of thing.

I've parsed through my whole game log during the development of my DFMon tool as well and don't see any messages.

Do you have any couples that actually married on your site? The way the usual Bay12er runs a fort, no-body marries in a fort, all the couples they have immigrate already-married.

For marriage, two dwarfs must socialise with each other quite a lot. In a populous and busy fort, this just won't happen. This especially won't happen if the individual dwarfs have their own (separate) bed rooms. Their idle time will split between the main hall and their individual rooms and in the main hall, there'll be so many other dwarfs to mingle with that they never get the necessary twosome time with their prospective mate to make the next step(s); lovers and friends don't seek each others vicinity, dwarfs mingle with whoever happens to be near and it's pure luck if that is their lover of twenty years.

I've had a few dozen marriages in my forts, and every single one has been announced, regardless of what my meeting area arrangements were. I had _one_ case that looked like they went from "lovers" to "married" without telling, but the announcement simply got drowned in other messages, looking through the log found an announcement alright.

I have a fortress containing only the original seven dwarves. To speed up my numbers (I wasn't allowing anyone in from the outside) they spent the first two years doing little but drinking and partying in the grand dining room. 4 females, 3 males so I definitely have dwarves who have gotten married on site. Certainly their status is married and they have had children.

Could you please upload a copy of your gamelog.txt which has these messages in it? I'd be really interested to see them, if for no other reason than to include them in my dfmon tool and also to try and establish why I don't seem to get them!

I'm using an unpatched version of DF with no mods attached =\

My gamelog is way too large to handle reasonably (over 40MB, thanks to several thousand pages of sparring reports), but searching for "married" found:

This is all unmodded, unpatched DF. I'm getting a notice for every marriage without fail, but it's an ordinary announcement without pause or screen centring.

My fort, for example: 35 years old, 229 dwarves. 11 married couples, all of whom arrived already married except my duke & his captain of the guard wife. Quite a lot of dwarves have their own bedrooms & dining rooms, and with constant work on the megafortress, nobody has a lot of idle time. A week ago, I went through the population looking for relationships: The starting 7 are all friends with one another, but apart from them, there was only ONE friendship in the entire fort--and it wasn't even reciprocated: Dwarf B only regarded Dwarf A as a Casual Acquaintance.

On embark, I wanted my expedition leader to get hooked up pretty much ASAP, so I burrowed him & his most likely sweetie into a "Love Nest" with a bed & a good supply of food & drink, and sealed the door until they got to kissing. I may have had to do this again to get them to actually marry, I forget.

Do they always forgo any formal celebrations? I don't think I've ever actually seen a wedding reception happen.

I only ever see marriages when i cram 20+ dwarves into a 5x5 room. My normal 17x17 dinning room and large dormitory/individual room set up doesn't seem to encourage marriages.
I think they only have ceremonies if there is a dinning room or statue garden designated, but i'm not sure on that part.

I think they need to have access to a meeting place that's currently free. Meeting areas that already have a party going are thus excluded. More importantly, since the vast majority of my marriages are arranged and forcefully encouraged by me, they usually have no access to a meeting area at the moment of marriage: the easiest way to get a pair of dwarfs married is to lock them into a 2x2 room for a long time (letting them out to eat and drink, obviously - ghosts don't marry. I think.). Actually getting both of them in there can be a chore and usually requires disabling the local meeting hall. So either there was no meeting hall, or they couldn't reach it because they were locked in.

The wedding receptions above all happened in forts where a lot of dwarfs had much free time and the meeting areas were fairly small. That can lead to "spontaneous" marriages, but it's a fairly rare occurrence once you have 30+ beards milling around. Forced socialising by locking the lovebirds into a shared room is reliable and usually takes around a season from "lover" to "married". Less intrusive "encouragement" of socialising can easily lead to waiting times of five years and more.

Marriages are always shown. I had a marriage happen in the "If Bay12 Forum was a Mountain Hall" community game/thread, where Girlinhat got married to Saltmummy. It was very amusing.
