Rigid plates
« on: February 26, 2014, 06:42:36 am »

So from the patch notes I can see that upgrades for tanned goods are possible:

chitin => clean => chitinplate => combine => rigid chitinplate
shell => clean => shellplate => combine => rigid shellplate
scale => clean => scaleplate => combine => rigid scaleplate

Let's say I go through all of these steps and get rigid xxplate. i haven't seen any recipes yet that require these higher-quality materials. am I missing something?

They are metal grade armor... Isn't that enough?

Its still leather, so any leather recipe will use those materials. They are just stronger(and probably heavier). You can also make specific leather armor sets in the Tailor's Workshop, for Dwarves atleast(Other races use different workshops).

Also from the Manual:

Leather/Fur = Vanilla Leather ::: Tough leather = Copper

Studded leather = Bronze ::: Lamellar leather = Iron

Chitinplate = Bronze ::: Rigid Chitinplate = Iron, but very light

Scaleplate = Bronze ::: Rigid Scaleplate = Iron, fireproof

Shellplate = Bronze ::: Rigid Shellplate = Between iron and steel, heavier.

I usually use Lamellar and Rigid Scaleplate for armor, then just sell the Rigid Shell/Chitin at one of the trading posts for Shillings.

Also, fur protects against cold-damage; so it'd be a good idea to layer it into the uniforms of any squad that fights in freezing weather/anywhere near a watermage.

For what it's worth I equip all of my soldiers with Rigid Chitinplate padded clothing under their armor.

Bronze-grade clothing is a thing of beauty.

chitin = insects. Try spiders, giant cave beetles or dew beetles.

Boulder crabs give chitin too which you can get on embark. They're a lot bigger and give more chitin than dew beetles even if you slaughter them as they're hatched. Also of note, Horned cave turtles give scaleplate as well as shellplate.

As others said, they can be used in any recipe that calls for leather. Including ones where the quality doesn't matter so you'll want a separate stockpile to keep them safe. I once ended up with my military running around with dragonscale backpacks and waterskins.

From the Raws I can give you additional information on them: Lamellar is as heavy as Iron, Rigid Scaleplate is 75% lighter and Rigid Chitinplate is as light as vanilla leather (1/15th of Iron). Rigid Shellplate is as heavy as silver. Related, Netherbark counts as leather and is used the same way. As well as being temperature proof, it's as strong as steel while being a quarter the weight.

You can also use the meat and bones from butchering to make ironbone and bloodsteel metal through alchemy in metal-scarce areas. You have to research that and it takes longer to set up but a good embark strategy could speed that up...

I have found ridgid chitin plates very useful when you have fire mages, stops them burning your dwarves.

Is there some trick to boulder crabs?  10 years alone in a room with nests, they claim the nests but never lay eggs.

they lay flux stone boulders no problem, but getting them to lay eggs and reproduce is the hard part.
