Bug or feature? Tooth hauling
« on: March 10, 2014, 10:38:50 am »

Have a nuisance ongoing problem in my current fort; Urist McPeasant got her teeth knocked out by a goblin during an early ambush, then died later of other wounds.  Her body was interred in a coffin properly, but about 8-10 individual teeth got into a bone/teeth/skull/shell stockpile I use for crafting.

Since then, I have a perpetual "Put item in Tomb" job on the 'j' list, resulting a one dwarf grabbing a single tooth, walking it to the coffin, flashing a '?' for a second, then walking the tooth back to the stockpile....over and over and over and over...

I have (several times) removed (x) the coffin and reinstalled it; each time, the partial skeleton gets transferred to a new open coffin normally, and the single tooth hauling job moves there as well.  I've also tried to craft all of the teeth, but get cancellation spam even when the tooth is sitting right there in the stockpile (not sure if dwarven ethics permit making crafts with dwarf teeth).

Has anyone seen behavior like this before?  I'm to the point where I want to just atom-smash all of the teeth in the fortress to make the problem go away.

I've not seen this behavior, but you can stop the jobs by {f}orbidding the teeth.

Never ran into that problem myself. Try forbidding dwarven teeth in stockpile options?

... (not sure if dwarven ethics permit making crafts with dwarf teeth) ...
Either that, or simply because they are remains (of any kind) from a dwarf.  Dwarf merchants and even dwarf zombies get interred in coffins.

...  I'm to the point where I want to just atom-smash all of the teeth in the fortress to make the problem go away.
This should work too if you don't want to keep the forbidden teeth.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

So the Coffin and the Refuse Stockpile are playing tug-of-war with the tooth?  That seems like a thing which should not be happening, given that bodies don't get hauled back to the corpse stockpile after burial.

Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)

I'm not entirely sure what's going on there... but no, it's not possible to make crafts from dwarven teeth in vanilla DF.
