Adjustable Standing Desks
« on: February 23, 2014, 12:38:33 pm »

We had powered desks that went up and down at a job I was at recently. They were herman miller desks. My new job doesn't have it. I want one for home. However, they tend to be very expensive. I don't just want a standing desk, I want a powered one that goes up and down. Preferably one I can mount monitor handles on so my monitors don't fall off as I go up to stand and down to sit.

geekdesks.net have gotten good reviews, but are expensive.

I have heard people say try Ikea, but the nearest one is 35 miles away and I don't see anything on their website. I didn't want to drive all the way down there unless someone had a suggestion.

Just want a rectangle desk with a motor so it goes up and down. Prefer that I can mount a monitor handle on it.

Build one.  I have a 6'5" friend who did that.

You might want to change the title. I thought it was spam until I saw someone had posted in it (after which I still thought it was spam, but wanted to see what they'd said).

On a serious note, go ahead and build one. It's useful experience and doesn't seem like a terrifically difficult project, plus it's almost guaranteed to be cheaper than buying a commercial version. Unfortunately, I can't tell you where to find parts, due to my non-American nature.

I'd look for used ones on eBay or wherever companies offload surplus office furniture (even asking a company in the process of moving offices might work). I recommend trying before buying though, in case the motor is worn out.

Office furniture surplus is a great resource. You can often find very sturdy bookshelves too.
