Legendary swordsdwarf kills epic minotaur in one hit?!
« on: February 15, 2014, 09:56:04 pm »

Epic ass minotaur comes onto my map,(I dunno if my population of 207 has to do with increasing epic shit coming in) I send my hammerdwarfs out to him, with low hopes. He charges one guy and kills him instantly with his horns, grabs another by his neck and breaks him in half basically. Then here comes my legendary swordsdwarf ( dunno why he is in my hammer squard tho lol ) and just ran up to him and in one hit tears his brain from his body with a (+Steel sword+).He is also a Legendary Fighter and dodger. Just amazes me how good a sword is compared to a hammerdwarf.

Yeah, megabeasts (excluding dragons) are pretty much piss weak at the moment. No armor means they get destroyed by a competent edged military, if they don't run into cage traps. Save your blunt soldiers for armored targets. Also, legendary weapon skills rape ass.

I think you forgot Bronze Colossi. They don't have to worry about blood, pain, or fatigue, like other creatures do. Megabeasts and semi-megabeasts are definitely not what they could be.

But minotaurs are the weakest of them all, as they are the smallest. Sometimes they have weapons though, which will make them more difficult to deal with, if you don't have highly trained militia. But the minotaur can get some good hits in, as they are still much larger than dwarves.

I think my record is my duke killing a dragon in 2 hits, but one-shotting is definitely possible, and I'm not just talking about creatures made of ridiculous things, like steam. As far as I know, any living creature that has vital organs can be killed by causing significant damage to any one of those organs--and just about any kind of creature is capable of making those kinds of instakill hits. My supercharged duke, with all his Legendary This, Legendary That, and Masterwork Steel Everything, who just yesterday casually soloed a bronze colossus without so much as a bruise, could still very, very easily die to some random Dabbling Bowgoblin. Or to a Horse who felt crowded in his pasture, and just felt like kicking somebody in the head.

So really, the unusual thing about OP's post is not that a Legendary Swordsdwarf killed a minotaur in 1 hit, but that such a skilled dwarf (in a fort of 200+ dwarves) is still using only a +steel short sword+. What the heck are you doing with all your ☼masterworks☼?

The last paragraph of the wiki on dragons says that they may occasionally wear large armor. However it's not sourced, so I have no idea. I'll check my recently captured Dragon once I feel he's comfortably trained.

The only dragons I see armored are those in the arena. Probably happens when they get spheres.

I had a minotaur get taken down by a handful of war dogs.  He killed or maimed 3 or 4 of them before going down, but still.  It was really disappointing because I had started a collection of caged Minotaurs, too.

I had a vomit beast die because one of my dwarves looked at it.
It dropped down into the death pit full of my legendary candy equipped soldiers. The beast landed in 2/7 water and... Died... Not from the impact, but two turns later.

I don't understand why you need magma.

my favorite fb kill was made by my legendary engraver, who was on his way to finish smoothing the forge area, so they could have happy thoughts in their prison...
he'd apparently met up with a forgotten beast I'd forgotten about, that came from the caverns.

There wasn't so much as a combat log, and I never would have known, had I not noticed a random bit of water in a passageway that bypasses the caves on the way to the forge.
If I remember right, it said something like fb water or w/e

A while later, I was checking the thoughts of random people, to see what they thought the fort was lacking, and I randomly checked my engraver.
He was ecstatic, and he had a kill. 1 kill. A forgotten beast made of snow. A forgotten beast that should not have survived 257 years to attempt to attack an engraver that was on his way to the magma forges. A fb that miraculously survived 257 yrs, w/out being killed by something random in the caverns, was recorded as being killed by my engraver's body heat...Now that was a "I love this game"  moment

If you can get a Minotaur to pick up something then spear of destiny them.. perhaps you could make a Minotaur more like the beasts of old.

I wonder if the problem is just that sparring levels dwarves up so quickly... if the only way to get to Legendary was with actual combat (against armored opponents with weapons), it would take a lot longer, there'd be plenty of casualties along the way, and those minotaurs might pose an actual threat.

Basically the same for skills in general really. It feels a bit weird having Legendaries in all the useful jobs after only a couple of years of a new fort.

Yeah, One hitting kills are a thing.
