Removing items from a dwarf's inventory
« on: February 18, 2014, 08:58:14 am »

I made five adamantine axes and shields for my military. All of the soldiers picked up this equipment and it worked incredibly well (there were goblin limbs everywhere). Since than I have changed my military and it is different dwarves fighting, but my ex-soldiers are still carrying the adamantine equipment they fought with. None of them grew attached to it and they have no need of it anymore. Is there a way to make them put the axes and shields back in my weapon stockpile?

are they still in the military? - then they'll keep their equip per the standing orders
are they wood cutters? -- Woodcutter will use any axe - and if there's one in their inv. still, they'll likely use it
Are they legendary axelords? - Personally I've never taken legendaries out of the military...But they love fighting - don't get unhappy thoughts from extended patrol duties - they won't take on regular jobs, and train constantly in their free time. Even if they aren't in the military, since they are training they'll use equipment that they can get their hands on - especially if it was already in their inventory

An easy fix if it's any of those, is to dump the items from their inventory. Then just reclaim them after they've been dumped.

shields don't get any bonus what-so-ever from being made of adamantine btw
wood blocks just as well, but heavier stuff hits harder - go steel or bismuth bronze for shields

Not so. Let's say you have a squad of axedwarves. The leader calls dibs on an *adamantine axe*, and then that *axe* is claimed for the uniform of the squad leader. If you then deactivate that dwarf, the *axe* remains claimed for the uniform of the squad leader. Since the Woodcutter labour claims its own 'invisible uniform', another axe will have to be found.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

None of them are still in the military or working as woodcutters and they are all quite low skill with axes. Would it be possible to dump an item via the stocks screen if a dwarf is carrying it?

Thanks for the info about adamantine shields. Do other types of armor benefit from being made of adamantine?

If they aren't in a squad and don't have the Woodcutter labour enabled then they won't carry an axe unless they're hauling it, dumping it, or bringing it to the trade depot. You can order an item in inventory to be dumped, but the dump order won't take effect until the item is out of the dwarf's inventory.

Forbidding the axes might have an effect.

The dwarves in question were an unskilled strand extractor and the bookkeeper, which both took a very long time to complete one job. When they had finished the jobs they were doing they put the equipment back in the armory themselves. Now my military can get back to butchering goblins at full strength! Thanks for the help.
