Pig Iron Not working?
« on: February 16, 2014, 04:55:32 pm »

Masterwork DF v4h, I had no problem with this in v4f.
Alienware m17x running Windows 7 64-bit.

I have iron bars.
I have a magma forge that works fine, proof is that it makes iron bars.
I am not using any warrens. (I've researched this issue, yes.)
I have marble and limestone.

The magma smelter will not enable the pig iron command.  It's there in red, but won't turn green.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have fuel?

Edit:

Even when working with magma, the pig iron and steel bar reactions require fuel. Just not as much as they would without magma.

You still need coke or charcoal as a reagent in making pig iron, even with a magma smelter.

I never seem to find coal on my maps anymore, even through I read in other people fortresses that we are losing dwarves all the time to them.  Maybe it's just the gaia map I play on.

Anyways steel production is the reason I'll bring 30+ anthracite with me on embark.  They are only 9 embark points a piece so it adds up to maybe a bit more than a drake or so in terms of bringing stuff with you.  Then I'm guaranteed to have a nice pile of roughly 300 coke sitting in a pile of 30 stones in my wagon.  Usually use a little to get an initial armor set and weapons for my two started military dwarves but later on it makes it very convenient for steel production.  Especially since anthracite seems to be much lighter than other stones.  You're dwarves can move and turn it very fast into coke.

@kamikaze

I just use Bituminous Coal, only 3 points per. 3x B.Coal = more coke than 1x Anthracite.

That was it, thanks!

Only subterranean trees on the map, found one oil shale so far & looking for bituminous coal or other fuel, so fascinating map.  Tons of other minerals so far, though...
