Worldbuilding : Decisions Required!
« on: January 18, 2014, 05:22:40 pm »

Hey guys, I'm thinking about starting another worldbuilding project and decided to get some input at various stages. Firstly, I'll need a physical setup. :)

I've done a few of these before, though of course they never get finished. I did have one where I had two countries (out of about, I don't know, fortyish planned?) fairly fleshed out with a history over 600 years, dynasty lines, cultures, diplomatic relations, and major characters. I also implied a lot about a Roman - Empiresque type thingy that had died. I'm looking to do something similar to that, but hopefully I'll actually finish it if someone nags me.

Vote above! :)

Voted for three continents, because if you wanna cosplay Roman Empire, you gonna need territories to colonise.

There's probably going to be multiple empires at different times and different places, just like real life! :)

I'm not sure how the scaling is going to work, to be honest. I think I'm going to try and work with an area roughly the size of modern europe (from france to the beginning of russia.)

I'm currently working on 10x15 pixel flags (is hard) for various countries :)

Edit : In terms of total population that would be *almost* equivalent to the roman empire... given that they never really went further north - east than germany.

Pseudo - Edit : WOW, that's more than I thought they ever had! Alright, I'll need to crank the scale up then. :P

Edit again : I have about 25 different flags now. I have yet to be able to draw a bull with only 150 pixels available, however a skull, a goblin, a drop of blood, a crescent, a helmet, a shield, a tree, a scythe and even a fish have been used. :)

New poll up! :D

Edit : Working on the world now. God does everything look so shit in paint. XD

Korglåsser is a country based on the south-eastern edge of Vulestårn. In the year 500 A.C it is a nation primarily composed of Bjülern people who worship Dengû Hattor, although it possesses a minority of immigrants of various cultures who worship Remus' Son. The government is analagous to a trading city state republic although the size of the country is too large for that government type to be totally efficient. The country has recently lost land to Byurstraüm via a lost defensive war. The current ruler is Numsten Harguest (Reign 492 – 500.)

Småndjer is a country based on the southern edge of Vulestårn. In the year 500 A.C it is a nation primarily composed of Bjülern people who worship Dengû Hattor, although the north – eastern area of the country contains a moderate amount of Kyörid people who worship Dengû Hattor. The government is a medieval elective monarchy. Voting members are the counts of each province and the current king (who has a double vote.) The current ruler is Thur Donnomil (Reign 475 – 500.)

Just a preview of two countries of the northern continents' 'bios' while I'm setting up. :)

The year I'm using as my first reference point is 500 A.C (after Calendar), which is why the reign of everyone caps out then. This will be changed as I get around to detailing stuff. :)

Edit : I'm away from my laptop until friday night, but I might be able to squeeze out the situation on the northern continent at that time. :)

I always think characters make history seem more alive (see e.g. Crusader Kings 2), this applies especially when you're writing about it. What do you dynasties look like, and how do you go about creating them?

I don't have any dynasties yet. I've given all the countries a ruler at a point in time at the moment. When I go through each country in depth I set up a line of rulers and tie them to certain dynasties. I don't like to explicitly say "this guy was super nice." Instead I say something like "this guy was highly respected by the commoners and nobles alike for his charity work and just manner." Generally I let the characters actions speak for themselves.

A brief update with some of the major religions. There's plenty more to come!

Spoiler: Religions! (click to show/hide)

Any feedback or ideas are welcome! :)
