Tangakenshal: The Artifact Lead Battleaxe
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:53:07 pm »

Apparently Tangakenshal means Spotbud, which is really upsetting because Tangakenshal is so fun to say.

But I digress.

Is lead good for a battleaxe? It weighs 9 Urists. To compare to Copper(7Γ), Silver(8Γ), Iron(6Γ), Steel(6Γ), and Bismuth Bronze(6Γ).

The wiki tells me that less weight on an edge weapon can make it harder to tear through tissue, so I've got that going for me, but I can't find lead's shear values.

It's pretty much one of those fantasy warhammers with a face the size of the wielder's head. Give it to your biggest, strongest dwarf, and treat it as a blunt weapon that has an edge when applied to bare skin or scale.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

The guy holding it is described as "mighty and tough". Does that qualify? :D

So it's rather ineffective? Or does it actually work as a blunt weapon? Because IIRC fantasy warhammers don't work so good irl.

In arena mode, a lead battleaxe doesn't seem to do anything other than bruise skin even on an unarmored opponent.

Not surprising.  Since it doesn't cut well, the damage is converted into blunt where a small contact area is best.  Battle axes have a contact area of 40,000 according to the DF Wiki, while maces have 20 and war hammers have 10.  Even crossbows are better at blunt damage, with a contact area of 10,000 :(.

Depends how big he is, but it's a start. You can check size through the latest version of Dwarf Therapist (I think, anyway) or through a DFHack script.

Since arena dwarves are generated with perfectly average stats, your dwarf might do better. If he's skilled enough to be unhittable, send him against some opponents and report back. :) It's kind of the opposite situation to yours, but one of my dwarves has racked up 43 kills with an artifact bone shield. Dunno what a shield's contact area is though...

Level up a dwarf enough and it hardly matters what equipment he's using*. I once had a macedwarf get twenty-some kills with an adamantine mace before I noticed and assigned him a more useful weapon.

*against goblins and trolls, anyway. FBs are another matter.

Test lead axes in arena mode.

Further testing shows pretty much the same thing as my initial test did; a lead battleaxe will primarily bruise skin with an extremely low chance of shattering a bone (like one in a hundred strikes) regardless of skill level.

It may be a lead axe now, but lead is pretty malleable (even when alloyed with tin and made into bars over an inch thick, I can still easily flex the things) so pretty soon it would be a lead hammer weather you liked it or not.

So Tangakenshal's a heavy paper weight designed for love taps and occasional love wallops.

Seems a bummer. I'll just have to give him a steel battle axe I've got lyin' around.
