Has this happened to anybody before?
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:27:06 am »

So I am using Masterwork V4.g, and embarked in a nice location split between a good and evil region. So I start my fortress, start digging things out, and then suddenly I get a message: "_____ has bled to death" and the next second I get the message: "Your settlement has crumbled to its end". A bit confused, and thinking that perhaps an evil cloud had spawned while I was not looking, I reclaimed the fortress. However, about a second after un-pausing, the same thing happened. I embarked a third time, but this time only used the one-step button. Even though there was no cloud or anything, after two steps one dwarf started "gushing blood" out of every possible body part, and by the next step all dwarfs also were in this state. All had "gushing blood", blistering and bruising on every body part. What is happening? Has this happened to anybody before?

I'm guessing a cloud passed through that instant kills things.  Maybe after you reclaimed the coating from it was still all over the ground?  Evil biomes can be very tricky like that.

You're right. I reclaimed again, and found that everything was covered with "abominable vapor". Thanks for figuring that out! - too bad the embark is now unusable.

-EDIT-
interestingly enough smaller pets die as the game loads, even before un-pausing - that cloud really is instant death

if you are using dfhack, you should be able to remove the abominable vapor coating everything by using the dfhack command 'clean all'. It will remove all contaminants from creatures and items. So once you have embarked, before unpausing, enter that to the console and voila, your fort will not instantly crumble to its end.
It would allow you to at least start your embark in relative if brief peace...

Also, if there is snow on the map, I recommend also using 'clean map snow', as snow can also contain evil syndromes, as I have found out to my amusement/dismay.

Glad you figured it out. There are places only the dead are meant to go. When warlock comes out try embarking there. See how they react to that deadly of a coating.

Solitaire has a good point about snow. If it's cold your spring embark might be unmelted. It may not be deadly clouds but deadly snow. Maybe dfhack clean and flee under ground as fast as possible.

They will probably fall over dead. ^^ Dont know if I can make them immune to hardcoded syndromes.

could you create a reaction that would render them bloodless so if they did lose all their skin it wouldn't matter?

edit: a similarly fun reaction might be rendering someone fatless (esp dwarves) to make them partially immune to fire
