inactive -> uniformed, strips naked when released from station
« on: January 18, 2014, 07:41:32 pm »

I made uniforms for my woodcutters and set their schedule to wear them when off duty for every month.  Then I called them up to see what they wore, and they were just right (except for an occasional missing sock).  But when I cancelled the on-station, they dropped *everything* (except axes and an occasional mitten) and went back to cutting wood.

What gives?

Woodcutters and miners have their own uniforms, and should never be soldiers.

I'm not using them for soldiers.  I just want them to wear leather armor while they're out cutting wood.

Well, you can't  :P

You can make leather trousers and stuff for your whole fortress, and the woodcutters will wear them as clothes though.

basically, hunters, miners and woodcutters have a uniform as part of the job, consisting of their equipment, which conflicts with their military uniform. Just don't try to make it work, because it doesn't

Thanks... I never have run across mention of that before.  In fact I thought I had read about other people doing it.

Quick question. How crazy would it be to mod the game so that the uniforms for miners and woodcutters and hunters would default to trying to get leather armor, and maybe a shield, as well as their pick/axe/crossbow

Picks and axes are multi-grip things...
Bucklers might work.

And good luck finding the right file.

Umm, both picks and axes are 1handed, unless my game has lost its shit. Cause the squad I'm looking at that has 2 axes and 2 picks (and 2 swords, 2 hammers, and 2 spears. I like my options varied.) And all 10 of them are also carrying iron shields (steel weapons. I've had rather limited supplies of steel this fort, so its only for weapons)

Dwarves who are particularly small will need to hold picks or axes in two hands, but the majority of dwarves will hold those weapons one-handed.

As far as I knew those rules were still bugged, since most dwarves can 1hand longswords (dunno, havent been at war with humans in a long time, and the wodden ones elves have are worthless) and I've never actually seen a dwarf use 2 hands on any dwarfmade weapon.

I've seen dwarves small enough to multigrasp dwarf-made weapons. Of the 41 adults in my fortress, two are small enough to 2H a pick. One of them is a miner, and she is indeed multigrasping the pick. I don't normally check though, so unless I happen to see it when I'm looking at their inventory for other reasons I unconsciously assume that they're holding it in one hand.

The weapon bug is that wield vs. no wield is not respected for individual creatures. Some dwarves should be big enough individually to wield human weapons, and a very rare few (much fewer than 1/49) should be too small to wield a pick or battleaxe, but no dwarf can wield a human weapon and all dwarves (even the bugged microdwarves) can wield a pick or battleaxe.

1H vs. 2H is respected, if a creature's racial size is large enough to wield the weapon at all.

Awwww that "uniform-bug" is a shame.
Since picks alledgedly use the mining-skill for combat, I had planned to turn my miners into some kind of national-emergency-guard that can go and whack the crap out of intruders if need be.
But this should still work if I am willing to see them take their time while searching for their respective uniform, right?

or rotate miners. By the time they reach skill level 15 or 20 or so, change their labors to exclude mining and give it to somone else. Put the ex-miners in the militia. Make sure you have spare picks for that.
