setting a pond zone
« on: January 18, 2014, 03:20:57 pm »

I want to irrigate a spot for farming, but I'm having a hard time setting the pond zone next to my well. I press "I" to go into the activity zones menu, then select the area to designate the zone (a 3x3 area), and then press "p" to designate it as a pit/pond zone. Then I press "Enter" because I should be done...

Except the above button sequence doesn't designate the zone as a pond. The zone that gets designated is an abomination that is part Garbage Dump, Pen/Pasture, Meeting Area, Hospital, and Animal Training room.

What am I doing wrong?

wells are sort of automatic pond zone/water source, a pond zone doesn't work on them (that's as clear as I remember. Q explained it better once but I've forgotten already)

Wells are an automatic water source but I want to irrigate a stone floor by telling my dwarves to dump water on it. I believe you have to designate the stone floor as a pond zone for them to do that. Unless I misunderstand how it works?

Pit/Pond has to be placed over empty space. You need to dig a hole in the floor above your farm, and drop water from there (building a floor with stairs also works).

Well that would be why it's not working. Though this seems overly complicated for what should be a simple task. Couldn't there just be an irrigate option in the action zones menu? I don't see why a dwarf should have to climb a flight of stairs just to turn a water bucket upside-down.

They don't want to get their beards wet, it's so long that it touches the floor  :D

note that the version is 34.11? It's actually 0.34.11
When it gets to 1.00.00, it's the first version that toady would call a complete game. So yes, stuff doesn't always make sense and needs weird workarounds. I usually try to laugh about it, most people do and just make jokes about things like this, because complaining really has no use whatsoever. You might be able to go to the suggestions part of the forum, maybe noone suggested this yet.
