Possessed dwarf not picking items, despite their existance.
« on: January 13, 2014, 09:08:28 pm »

I have a possessed Leatherworker that demands Stone, Leather, Bones, Cloth, Metal and Raw Green Glass. However, I have all of those materials in the fortress.

He already picked up:
Horse leather
Horse bone [14]
Badger Boar left rear leg bone
cave spider silk cloth
gold bars

We are in a state of prolonged siege, so burrow restrictions are in order. The dwarf has a preference for orthoclase and alpaca hair. I don't have orthoclase in the map and as he picked up cave spider cloth, I don't think this is an issue.

I'm somewhat boggled by this problem. The hypothesis I've thinked as to why this is happening may be because he wants some bone that's outside the fortress' walls. But as is, it's sending him on a near-suicide mission...

...Apparently (after a bit of savescumming and hacking), he went looking for a piece of cloth that had just been brought to a stockpile. Is this common? Can't they just pick up cloth (or other materials) wherever they lie?

I have to write something... well here goes:
"A dwarf isn't a dwarf unless he dies the most !!FUN!! of ways", Quote unknown, possibly Armok.

Doktoro Reichard is quite pleased with making a Great Carbonite Trap

Why shouldn't you write with a broken pencil? Because it's pointless!

they can't always pick things up where they lie, especially if someone else is already on the way to pick it up

I also am having similar issues,
My possessed dwarf only wants "skeleton" and "cut gem", I've got a whole refuse pile of solid bones as well as about 30 cut gems (in their own stockpile) however the dwarf makes no move for either, further note is that she's already collected halve the refuse pile of bones earlier.

Edit; so after a dangerous length of time it appears that after cutting a blood gem she leapt onto it like a wild cat, slightly irritating that it didn't give me any indication that it required a particular gem, either problem solved.

The type shouldn't have been an issue. Do you have any burrows set up that would include the jeweller's but exclude the gem stockpile?

this. Having them collect a huge load of some item is an indication of the planepacked bug, which involves active burrows during a mood, I'm a bit hazy on the details. You can look it up on the wiki if you want to know more. The bug section for moods on the wiki probably lists your problem if it wasn't planepacked

Quote
Moody Dwarves don't respect burrows when grabbing a workshop, but DO when looking for items. If his claimed workshop is outside his assigned burrow, the dwarf will continue to grab materials until all materials of the needed type are exhausted within his assigned burrow, this is similar to the Planepacked glitch

Ok so I have no burrows, also I have another strange mood this time the dwarf has gathered nothing
He wants "stacked leather" i have some
"Shining bars of metal" I have some
"Rough gems" I have loads, all kinds
"Skeletons" whole stockpile
"Stacked cloth" by armok do have cloth
"Cut gems" whole stockpile, one of every type
"Quarry".... I have no idea what he wants there, the plant? I tried the wiki but it just goes to the bush.
But regardless he won't leave and gather anything.

I will take the the wikis advice and dl dfhack to check what he "really" wants,
Ill check back with details later.

A quarry is a place where rock is mined. The dwarf wants a chunk of stone.

What mood is it, and are there any tasked items in the workshop? That'll narrow down the first item on the list.

"Stacked cloth" by armok do have cloth

Cloth is type dependent.  It could be pigtail cloth, silk, or yarn cloth.  Check showmood in DFHack.

Ok so after the ordeal of getting dfhack running on this particular save (I'm mostly computer illiterate so it was quite fun for me) I've found that silk cloth is the first thing on his list so that's whats holding him up.
