armories with dfhack r3

I think I understand the use of the weapon rack for the squad, but I'm not clear on the armor stands, cabinets, and chests mentioned at https://github.com/peterix/dfhack

Do you create a big "armory/barracks" with the weapon rack, then armor stands for each dwarf inside and assign them to the individual dwarves?  Do the cabinets and chests go in their rooms, or under the "umbrella" of their armor stand?

What's the usual setup to take advantage of all the dfhack fixups?

Also... If their schedule specifies no uniform when inactive, do they still "own" their uniform when they're off duty?

Yes. You can even have them wear their armor when off-duty. This is a major advantage because they will not have to re-grab their armor, which saves you time. You can also use this to have every civilian wear armor (like leather or chainmail) which will increase their chances of survival if in a dangerous biome (or cave exploring).

As I understand it, you use one of the designated items to create a barracks. The barracks is just a room that they use to spar and train in (and drop their armor and weapons). I do not for sure know what the DFhacks do to help this out, but I can lead you down the right path by saying that you don't have to assign individual pieces to each dwarf. You assign certain squads to certain barracks' and then each dwarf does what they want to do based on their discretion.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

I never bother with any of this and just make a barracks from a single armor stand, even for 10 soldiers.

I guess the advantage would be that they keep their weapons etc in the barracks and don't have to go back to the stockpile, but in reality, they always wear their armor+weapons, so what is the advantage?

Does anyone make more elaborate barracks? Why? Does it help?

Personally I do some fancy barracks all the time, wiht several armor stands and weapon racks and all. But its only for look and to add a little bit of quality to the room. On the picking up and dropping off gear from stockpiles. Usually early on, and even later with the lesser trained squads, if I'm having them go inactive to help with large projects or w/e, I'll usually have them leave their armor, becuase at lower srmor user levels, they can be dreadfully slow.

Though if you're doing anything with marksdwarves squads, I usually build the barracks into my walls, or towers, and make sure to have large ammo stockpiles built into them, cause nothings more maddening than your rangers running off to some stockpile 5 miles away to grab more bolts, just as some flier or something comes storming into my fort. (I like to leave gates down for !!FUN!!)
