I'll sign up for the RP, it'll be fun, and I love this game (currently playing Distant Worlds Extended as the Riktoh, the Pendulum Guilds are mighty indeed)

In terms of research, I would highly suggest rushing to grab enhanced research as quickly as possible. In doing so, you get access to one of the earliest wonders in the game (Rusan Technology Installation, +30% Development, +100% High Tech Research Bonus) and your research speed is greatly increased. From there, the next tech I like to rush is Accelerated Construction, which gives the ungodly wonder Bakuras Highspeed Shipyards. The Shipyards boost colony development level by 30%, and ship construction speed by a whopping 200%, making your capital able to crank out a veritable flood of private ships, along with ensuring a colony rush.
