eggs --> birds
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:06:45 pm »

The wiki says that if you want eggs to hatch you have to keep the dorfs away by forbidding them or locking them up. But those require frequent checking to make sure you see them before the dorfs do.  Is there any way to avoid that?

I tried walling them in without a door, thinking the birds would just fly over, but never got any eggs.  (Maybe I didn't wait long enough?)

1: the eggs wern't fertilized. Even with a male bird on the map it's not a 100% guarantee sometimes.

2: You didn't wait long enough

don't wall off the room, just make sure it has a door and use (q) over the door, then (l) and (o) to lock it against anything. You only have to unlock it when the hatchlings hatch, or after more than 3 months, in that case the eggs were not fertile.

remove egg collection from your food stockpiles! dwarves will not gather the eggs.
also, when you notice some eggs are layed, you can remove them from cooking  in the stocks/kitchen screen.

I find that setting my stockpile settings and editing the kitchen settings is more work than simply forbidding te door

If I use poultry I generally have one or two hens in a separate room and lock them up. Once their chicks mature slaughter the old hens and all roosters, assign one/two hens from the chicks to the 'breed' pasture, and the rest of the hens to the eggs pasture. Slaughter any excess hens.

I guess autobutcher can save some work here but I've never really used it.

I use a central bird hall with separate nesting rooms. The rooms have a door leading to the central hall, and a back door for egg and chick collection. I start by locking all the back doors. To put the system into bird production mode, lock the front door to the hall. When you notice a bird has claimed a nest box, lock it in. If the eggs hatch (sometimes they won't, even with males about) then unlock the back door for chick collection. If enough time passes without hatchlings, open the back door and take the infertile eggs. This provides a lot of flexibility, as eggs and chicks can be collected without disturbing any other nesting birds, or having to forbid any eggs.
