270 vs 70
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:15:33 am »

I am curious why sometimes when I go through the plan your embark carefully menu I am given 270 points to distribute on skills and supplies, and other times I start with only 70. Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

the standard embark equipment sometimes varies in what meats or equipment it can bring. Depending on what is available, it may cost a few more or a few less points to get 'the list' completed.

In particular, the 70-point embark probably happens when your civ had no access to iron, forcing it to bring a steel anvil (worth 300☼) instead of an iron anvil (worth 100☼); since steel is made using a custom reaction, it's always available (even if its reagents are not available, for reasons).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Thanks for the help Quietust, I'll keep that in mind.

Normally what I do to fix this has been reloading the embarkation on the previous world, highlighting the same site only adjusting it slightly by one block row left or right. So maybe there's some randomness to it?

Your starting civ, if I'm not mistaken, is chosen at random when you first open the world map. However, there is no need to move your embark location. Simply cycle to the civ list using "tab" and choose a different civ and hope this one has access to iron.
