An argument with friends
« on: January 02, 2014, 02:16:56 am »

So I was playing Super Smash Brothers (A casual fighting Game) with my friends, and one of them got really upset with how I was playing: Namely that I was playing link and only using a couple moves, because they are relatively easy to use and are fairly effective. He got really upset and telling me to "Learn some new moves", "Use a different character" and other such things, all in a really nasty tone of voice, then began targeting me exclusively, eventually ending up doing nothing but waiting to hit me with a ranged character and then spamming an attack just to trap me in a corner of the stage. I got fed up of this and told him to leave at this point. My question is this: Am I in the wrong here? I personally don't see how I could be: My strategies, while useful, are not game breaking, even with them, I win less often than he does, and I see absolutely no reason why he should be allowed to tell me how to play. But a long time ago, when I used to play with a different set of friends, I used to have much the same thing. So tell me: Am I in the wrong here? Your expertise is much appreciated.

Depends on your agreed-upon code of conduct. How do you guys play - everything goes, the game is balanced? Don't do these few things because they're outside of our skill range and thus game breaking for us? Be nice to each other and just play in silly ways because we shouldn't be focused on winning?

Also, I have a feeling this wasn't meant to be in Creative Projects.

I believe you are on the wrong sub-board.

Try Other games, General Discussion, or Life Advice

But in my opinion, unless you were using cheap combos he was just whining and making an ass of himself.

Whoops. Wrong forum, yeah. As for code, we really don't have one. It's more or less just "Don't be a jerk.".

edit: I don't suppose a kind moderator could move this for me? Pretty please with sugar on top?

In my opinion you found a way to use the game's mechanics in your favour and its up to your friends to find an effective countermeasure. Of course, this applies to your friend too and if he just wants to target your character and the game allows it, then thats allowable too.

In the end though playing games is all about having fun and clearly your one friends wasnt enjoying himself. Maybe (in order to be a good host) the best in this case to either play another game or pick another character or something. You've clearly demonstrated your skill one way so now see if you can beat him another way.

But that's just it, I'm not especially good. I can win about 40% of the time with this character, with any other I never win. He has no reason to be upset about this.

You might not like my response here...

You were doing nothing wrong in focussing on one playstyle. If it bugged people, thats thier probelm. Your pal came up with a countermeasure (note: they didnt have some kind of hissy fit and refuse to play...), and there is nothing wrong with that either - you needed to change and adapt your playstyle to cope instead of persisting against the countermeasure in the same way. The fact that you got all pissy about the fact that they had effectily contered the way you wanted to play instead of adapting and told him to leave is really out of order. They changed how they were playing to counter you - and you should have done the same thing - played a different character in a different way to counter thier change, not by throwing them out - that really sounds like a jerk move. The fact that this has ahppened more than once by the sounds of it really tells you everything you need to know.

Yeah, everything was fine up until you told him to leave, so I'd say you're in the wrong here.

But that's just it, he didn't come up with a countermeasure. His strategies could be countered by the simple expedient of not doing anything. The things he was doing didn't actually effect me, they just prevented me from playing the game. He did them specifically to be a jerk.

You seem to have a history of this.  It sounds like you never really tried to improve, just relying on the easy semi-effective tactics to get by.
It is pretty annoying and boring to play against a one trick pony.  There is nothing new or exciting when the players already know what you are going to do.  It is like playing against an AI with one setting.

As for your friend well... he choose a creative way to try to get you to switch characters and play another way.  Yea, he could have just left or quit, but he didn't.

In short, you may be a boring person to play smash brothers with.

So you were being cheap and your friend got pissy at you, so he started being cheap back and you got pissy at him. Sounds to me like y'all need to grow up a bit.

You're all so intent on "winning" that neither of you sound any fun to play with.

You may have just stumbled upon a circumstance that would be well served by a gentleman's agreement. He believes your specialization in one character makes the game less fun for him, and perhaps you would benefit from playing a wider variety of characters. Try playing on Random or make it a rule that if you use a character you can't play him again for the next two matches (for example, you could play A, B, C, A, B, C, etc. so you still get to play Link regularly).

Similarly, trolling behavior like getting everyone to gang up on one player or exclusively fighting one player when there's no team reasoning for it, makes the game less fun for everyone. Your group should also agree that they shouldn't do that kind of thing. Probably better to not try to come up with rules for this since it's so subjective. If the game allows teams, perhaps rotate teams so he has to be allied with you sometimes and must attack you other times.

Remember that, while trying to win makes the game interesting, it's more important that the game is fun. If he's winning more than you are and still not having fun, clearly winning isn't all he cares about. It's boring to fight the same opponent over and over. Imagine how you would feel if he also always chose the same guy and spammed certain attacks. It would get kinda old, right? But even if you think that would be fine, maybe he has different ideas about what entertains him.
