I've been trying to set up a successful archery range to train my marksdwarves for quite a while now. Does anyone know how to make these work?

That is one of the many bugs of the combat system.

Basically, it appears that the on-duty off-duty check for archery practice is one of the things in the code that is reversed, and so they will only do archery practice while off duty.

It also helps to overlap archery ranges with a standard armor stand/weapon rack barracks.

I use a similar set-up, with a few caveats. The pit down 1 z level is designated as the marksdwarf's barracks using an armor stand/weapons rack/whatever, that way any bolts that hit the wall and fall down onto the pre-laid ammo stockpile will automatically be re-used. On the floor they actually shoot on, is another barrack belonging to another melee squad, and the entire floor is covered in wooded spear traps on a repeater. Massive, automated training <3
