The balance regarding melee vs. missiles seems a bit off. I find there's a wide range where you can reasonably hold your own in melee but still get completely annihilated by ranged opponents. It doesn't help that NPC archers always have maximum vision range, regardless of surroundings and lighting. And the random hit location determination in ranged combat tends to work for those who have the advantage of numbers, i.e. your opponents.

Games can struggle with balancing for years after release and still never reach a level people agree on, DF is still in alpha. It may be quite some time before all the combat issues are worked out.
