Delver
« on: October 25, 2013, 01:40:41 am »

I'm really surprised I haven't found a thread for this game.

So here it goes:

Latest trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyN5PbKPiks
Previous trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ7n_C9KpuM

Website: http://www.delvergame.com/

I loved this game since first look and I'm going to buy it soon. And then I'm going to tell the world what I think. But I'm pretty sure I already know what I'm going to say.

This is AWESOME!

Its like Doom with randomly generated levels. Hope its moddable! Like, i'd make a doom mod for it!

More akin to Ultima Underworld than Doom. And I dunno, the graphics seem like a bit of an eye-sore to be viewing them this close. Like Wolfenstein 3D had higher res sprites than this.

Creator says it comes with level editor.

Oh, I think the graphics are inspired by Realm of Mad God. I like the aesthetics a lot, and there is a big difference between graphics and aesthetics.

I remember there being a mod for Doom with procedurally generated levels.

Not so much inspired, as using the same source for their graphics. They're both using the same popular open-source graphics pack (which I can't remember the name of).

Combat looks like what Minecraft's combat is; boring.
Enemies need more than just walk towards you and deliver instant damage in close range/shoot projectiles straight at you every now and then.

At least give their attacks a windup animation, so you can kite them when using melee weapons. That's like, my bare minimum.

The rest of the game looks p. cool though, and the aesthetics are p. okay as well.

Needs a larger view. Not fisheye because that's disorienting and irritating.

Needs slightly higher-rez graphics. I like pixel art, but 16x16 sprites are only OK if your screen resolution is wide enough to see 20 or so across. Think Spelunky or Link to the Past, not Donkey Kong.

Definitely agree on more animations. Again, you can have low pixel count but fluid animation with, say, 7 or 8 frames per attack and it will look fantastic. 2 frames per attack isn't enough.

It's just so close! So close.

Apparently art was subject to change, but some player says there will be an option to turn on old pixelated graphics too:

I tried this a good while ago on my phone, it was alright but really simple at the time. I don't recall it ever getting any updates of substance so it kinda just sat in my apps the rest of the time. Good to see it's on the move!

Also, the art is much better! Woot for what I'm assuming is Dusty's handy work.

OK, I bought it, I played it, I finished it, and I even made a video about it.

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ye_bpwdL-8

The only problem with the game is that it's short, and has little to no replayability, because it's quite easy. Afted dying a 1000 times in Cataclysm: DDA and Dark Souls even before the fun starts I like the hardcore side of the games. But maybe that's only me.

Just picked this up on the flash sale and played 45 minutes or so.  Seems fun so far.  The base game is pretty sparse, but it seems like one of those that's built to be an excellent springboard for modding.  Looking into that now.

I actually thought that combat was rather fun.  Enemy behavior seems pretty good.  They back away after you've hurt them.  They even bleed pixels when they're really hurt.  Smaller, quicker ones will try to kite you and only attack when you're distracted or have them cornered.  Ranged enemies will try to dodge and keep their distance.  The general trick seems to be winding up attacks and timing them just right that you'll land your blow and knock them back just as they come into range.
