Kind of a random topic, but I've been trying to remember the name of an old cartoon I saw back in...late 80's or early 90's?

The main character was this Savage Hero type whose tribe lived on the top of an island that was kind of mushroom shaped, so that the edge of the island that they dealt with was very far up from the water below. If I remember correctly, all of the islands in the show were kind of like that. Almost like cake serving platters.

In any case, for some reason he had to leave his home and go travel the world, which he did using a canoe/boat thing that had fold-out wings so he could glide down to the ocean.

The rest of the world was more technologically advanced than his tribe. I don't remember too much else, other than a specific instance where he's in a bar and some guy shows him glasses that can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth (pink for lying, blue for truth).


Unfortunately, google hasn't gotten me anything on this. Anyone else remember this show?

Nope. What I posted is about all I remember of it. Which is why it's proving so hard to google for.

Maybe it was The Herculoids, with one specific episode deviating from the regular spin of the show?  That's the only cartoon from that time period that I remember with a savage tribe that dealt with far more technologically advanced neighbors.

That looks... nothing like OP's description, but still awesome! It has just the right amount of 70s/80s cartoon "cheese" to make it both hilarious and entertaining.

My first guess was Blackstar, too, because for a second I thought the opening sequence had a big mushroom (it was a big tree, instead).  It's too bad you don't recall any of the supporting characters.  Often, those are the ones I remember the most from old cartoons, rather than the main character.  Just throwing this out there, but maybe the description fits an episode of Thundarr the Barbarian?  That show featured a savage hero in high tech settings, which changed week to week.

Hmm...no, doesn't seem to fit either. He wasn't a slave, he just had to leave his tribe for some reason.

I'm pretty sure the guy starts off alone and then meets people afterwards, but I can't for the life of me remember who he teams up with.

Vytor: The Starfire Champion seems like a close match. It has the island and the whole tribal/technology thing. Couldn't find the flying canoe or actual travelling going on, though, so this might not be it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3xuQSpXTT8

Edit: There's a flying canoe in a later episode, so this is pretty much what you're looking for.
