Who the hell was that?

Well so I just started playing DF, and I really enjoy adventure mode ;>.

I wandered around in the wilderness and was searching for a human settlement (how can  i recognize them on the map?) Then I found a large Temple(?), which had statues in it, I walked out of it and found a hut with all sorts of things filled in it, such as clothes, bones, wool etc. Then I walked northwards towards a little lake, then suddenly a guy called "high dawn" stood in front of me and said he wants to kill me. I took him out pretty easily with my bronze axe. But as soon as i killed him every animal (and there were lots of animals) on the field attacked me, I tried to run away but then  a horde of goblins attacked me aswell, and I got butchered alive ^^.... Well, what was that building and who was that guy who seemed to have controls over animals..

If anyone has further tips I would really appreciate that...

Probably the priest, they've got randomly generated names. Who knows why he was hostile on sight.

It definately was a high priest of something. Once you fought with him/her you became an enemy of the whole civilization. The news that you're an enemy is spread telepathically and every little thing will attack you. The chickens, rabbits, cows and people.

Possibly you took something from somewhere you shouldn't have, though that's not too likely.

Did you declare him a night creature? Though that shouldn't cause you to become enemy of the civ.

I was walking around and suddenly, it said that he stood up in front of me, I didn't take anything and couldn't talk to him

There's a chance you had civilisation attachments that were violently incompatible with the high priest's. This rarely happens.

It happens much more often that you accidentally or willfully attacked another civ member without realising - e.g. a tame ("stray") animal.
