Bad Magma Crab problem, I'm stumped
« on: December 27, 2013, 05:06:00 pm »

Ok, so I embarked in a beautiful volcano, and have just started my metalworking industry, but I'm having a huge problem with a magma crab.
This asshole magma crab has already killed one of my smelters and wounded 2 others. One of them is unconscious so I don't have a lot of hopes.

In an effort to curb the issue, I constructed a floor over much of the volcano caldera (see img below, delineated in blue is the floor construction), effectively separating my smelters from the open magma by a good distance, but apparently the damn crab is machine-gunning the dwarfs through the 1tile wide space required for the magma stations to function. Also, it apparently shoots the dwarf from like 10 z levels deeper.

What can I do to solve the issue? Ideally I'd like to block him off from shooting my dwarfs, and not kill it, because I want the problem to effectively be over forever, and not have to rekill the crabs each time they appear. But kill suggestions are also appreciated.

Any help is appreciated really, I haven't played the game since the last version and I'm a bit rusty.

I think your mistake was that you did not  build a magma-channel you can control with floodgates and bars. That way you can keep the magma creatures out.

So I would consider to build a channel into a new room, and rebuild the forges there.

First, you'll want to wall off that volcano. I guess you could floor the whole thing but that's a lot of work and a lot of materials. Second, you want to build your workshops so that they cover up the magma channels which give them access.

To elaborate, when you are about to place a magma workshop, you will notice some of the green squares are darker. These are the "impassable" tiles and they are also the ones which need to be placed directly atop the exposed magma. For forges, there are two such tiles. ONLY ONE of these needs to be placed on top of magma. If you do it right, the magma will be covered, and the workshop will be safe. If you have exposed magma AFTER you've finished constructing the workshop, it will not be safe.

I had the same problem in my last fort. I ended up flooring in the whole top of the volcano and built just like toomanysecrets says, with the impassable tiles over the hole in the floor for the magma. It takes a little bit of planning and you won't necessarily enjoy the layout of the forges, but it works. No moar crispy dorfs.
