No companions?
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:20:03 pm »

I've been having this problem recently where I can't find any warriors for the life of me. I've looked in just about every house, and have only found masons and the suchlike. I've even looked in fortresses and found absolutely no warriors. It makes it very hard to survive the night, as you can imagine. Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

There are a few things here.

1) All the forts near you are abandoned. More likely with a longer history.
2) You have no skills.

Towns tend to be townsfolk, and you can only really rally the towns once you become well known. Before that, a fortress is your best bet to find a companion. Barring that, make sure your in town before sunset!

No, I've started multiple worlds, and found absolutely no warriors/companions at all, whether it be in fortresses or in towns. Plus, yes. I do put points into skills and the suchlike, but when you can't walk to the nearest lair without having your face ripped off by the horrors of the night, its not very fun, is it? Also, I've found companions in towns before without mods or anything. This is a recent problem.

Try generating a basic parameter world with Medium history and a large number of civilizations. With about 100 years of history and a large number of civs, I don't find many abandoned forts. Up that to 500 years and it's hard to find any that aren't abandoned.

You can get companions by asking peasants to join you, but in the beginning it's very difficult and you have to ask a lot of people. Once you complete a quest and spread the news, recruiting commoners becomes much easier.

In my experience, the term 'companion' is completely interchangeable with 'meat-shield'.
In that respect, any manner of follower will do, be it a skilled warrior capable of actually doing something or a generic townie who's just there to die horribly so you don't. Bonus points if every companion you recruit for the latter purpose wears red.

Besides, human civilians are just about always armed with carving and boning knives, ridiculously effective weapons due to their size and the way weapon damage is calculated. Though lacking durability, human fish dissectors can be invaluable allies for the sheer damage they can do if they land a hit. Many a smug adventurer has met their end with the business end of some cutlery jammed into their eye through their steel helm. Many a vampire has been diced into hundreds of pieces by the same such weapons before having their brains mercifully crushed by more prudent adventurers. Now you will know why you Fear the Silverware.

If you really want your companions to equip themselves as warriors badly enough and are using DFhack(which you really should), a simple workaround is to temporarily bodyswap into them and manually equip armor and weapons. Remember to retrieve this equipment upon the companion's inevitable demise.

I actually like to pick companions that have good gear so that when they die, I get their gear.
