Ramps into the earth
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:11:06 am »

I feel a bit foolish asking this, but.

I went a new route with my fort entrance and instead of carving stairs down, I carved 3-wide ramps down (thinking I could place a depot inside, and the wagons can still traverse it.   Built a quick wall around it on 3 sides with the intention of building a bridge on the 4th open side.

However, all dorfs immediately became unable to move up or down the ramps.  Outside dorfs got stuck outside, inside got stuck inside.

Removing the top two wall pieces will now allow the dwarves to path DIAGONALLY through the top left and right ramps, but that's it.  I'm doing something wrong, what is it?

I would need to also see the Z level below what you showed. Given what you said, I suspect you have "unusable ramps" and in order to see what is causing it, I need to see both levels that the ramps exist on. But good news as well... Clever use of "unusable ramps" is the technique that is used to create "wagon only" paths so you can provide wagon access to the trade depot all the time while providing an alternate, highly trapped, path for the other members of a trade caravan.

Side view of a valid ramp setup:

Side view of an invalid ramp setup:
Code: [Select]
___▼#
___▲#

A ramp can only be used if it is braced against a wall and the tile above that wall is a walkable floor, and the only valid path is between that floor tile and the ramp itself.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
