Surprise in my fortress!
« on: December 30, 2013, 01:07:20 am »

So, I am actually pretty new to Dwarf Fortress, but have *hopefully* gotten used to a lot of the basic mechanics of the game. And there is still alot for me to learn.

Well... I was going in between the floors of my fortress, and I saw about, oh, six or so ravens flying around in one of my main stockpiles! For the past half hour, I've seen an announcement every now and then saying "Tholtig Bokbondatan, Bone Carver cancels Eat: Interrupted by Raven". Me being the derpy, and newb, person that I am didn't think of anything about it. After several days in game (maybe weeks, I don't know.), the Ravens left.

However, I discovered how those nasty little buggers got in! I drained a pool of water for a small farm for my fortress. I forgot to cover the exits so it wasn't an unneeded entrance. The lesson of this?: Cover your exits, if you don't want Ravens bugging your Dwarves... Or better yet... Goblins.

Note that I wrote this out of boredness, and it was something that made me laugh a wee bit. Hope this was the right forum. ^.^

Cheers!

And on a side note, moments after posting this, I had 16 Dwarves. I have had the largest migration wave I have ever seen! I quickly went from a mere 16 Dwarves, to bloody 45...

Time to start picking off the... weak.

Yes, this is the right forum. And hoboy. I welcome you to your fortressing career. You're lucky this was as bad as it got. Wait until some giant or summat shows up and you suddenly realize you forgot the doors. Good times.

I know, right? I am still awaiting my first goblin invasion.. Gonna be a while though. The current fortress that I was on, the one that was "invaded" by Ravens, is abandonded now. Went from 16 Dwarves to bloody 40+. Was out of drink, and not enough supplies to brew more ale.

Time to start from the ground up once more! Hopefully the Raven's ancestors/family doesn't come to haunt me Dwarves in an alternate universe.

Ravens never bother the dwarves in my fort, it's always the buzzards, vultures, and keas ( the one time they did show up) that barge into the fort, much to my annoyance.

I forgot to link a lever to a bridge, last time.

15 dogs and 3 dwarfs after, the Forest Titan was dead.

Wow, only three dwarves down? How many did you start with?

When possible, she prefers to consume pear cider and nectarines. She absolutely detests kobolds.

Undead siege and 3 goblin ambush squads were dealt with.

Oh, not good enough? Most of the military was stark naked because I changed around the squads and they dropped their gear, then got stationed for battle before gearing up properly.

Yeah, naked dwarves killed 100+ zombies plus a squad of marksgoblins and a squad of meleegoblins, and didn't take a scratch.

Yes, only 3 and 90% of the dogs..
1 squad of Swordwarf (average skill 2-3) + 1 squad of nearly legendary miners with copper picks  ;D

I was lucky it bleeded a lot ... and well, probably some of the stonefall traps in my Emergency Fortress Access area helped a lot.  8)

(BTW, easy titan.. only poisonous bite)

Out of all the things that I have read on this forum, that is by far the most badass thing I have ever heard. If the zombies ever had feelings, I bet they shat themselves. ^.^

Relax!

If your dwarves have access to water, they can survive off that indefinitely as long as you don't build a well over it (wells drain water, direct drinking doesn't).
If they don't, then your immediate requirement is to procure 33 units of booze some time in the next month and a half. For that, you only need seven plants. The labour force for gathering plants just turned up on your doorstep, and plump helmets and pig tails can be harvested just under a month after they're planted.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Heh.. Wish I'd known that before I pretty much had a "fuck the world" moment, and abandoned the fortress.

I personally thought that Dwarves HAD to have alcohol eventually, or they'd just die off. I knew they could drink water, and live, just not indefinitely... Now I feel like a derp.

However, new fortress is much better. Actually have a farm up and running, actually have some minerals (just some silver at the moment), and a soon-to-be military that I plan to start up. ^.^

Thanks for the advice though. I'll keep that in mind, lol.

Almost the same exact thing happened to me once, except it was giant sparrow corpses.

...shame, too. That fortress was going really well.
