Changing the biome around an active fortress?
« on: December 22, 2013, 10:27:52 am »

So I have started a fortress in an embark area I'm very happy with, but I've realized that half the map never thaws, which is a problem because it means the river that runs through the area is permanently dried out. So I'm wondering if there's a way to edit the save or the game files themselves so that the river at least thaws during summer? I know this is cheat-y, but I really want to have a flowing river and not just a dried-out ravine :P . Thanks in advance!"

I don't know if it's possible to alter the weather/temperature of the biome, but you can put magma under the river to thaw it. If you're not confident or willing to use pumps to do so then you can use dfhack to spawn some magma.

his ass I won't bother to save.

Magma: Still the best solution.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

You might be able to dig around the perma-frozen area of the map. Failing that, you could bring water up from underground and pump it to the surface, arranging the pumps so that they output directly to an Above Ground tile.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
