A few questions from a newbie
« on: January 27, 2014, 07:56:26 pm »

So, hello there. I've been lurking on this forum for a week or so, but I only got around making an account just today.
I'm doubtful about my current possibility of giving any actual contribution for now, from what I see I'm just getting the hang of the game.
So, I thought that I'd use a post of, well, questions, as an excuse to introduce myself to the community as well: as I said I don't have much to give, but that won't stop me from trying I suppose.
So, the questions I got are the ones who I have not been able to extrapolate from the wiki, a quick google search, or such: I hope that some wise elder knows the answers that I seek:
1) In the last fort I've been running lately, I basically flooded my living quarters. So I made a temporary big fat dormitory for everyone. So the question is the following: is it enough to set a bedroom from a single bed (large enough to contain the others of course) and make it a dormitory, or should I enable it on every single bed? Because as I'm writing, my dorfs seems to sleep wherever the hell they please, including the hospital (while healthy) and the ground. Yes, they seem to prefer the beds, but that might not be indicative of anything: as I said, they are perfectly happy to use beds even when they are not designated as dormitories...
2) I'm basically stuck with a Minotaur corpse on my doorstep. He isn't making any trouble (no evil biome), and since he died he became a quiet and unassuming fellow. I just don't like him hanging around there: I tried dumping the corpse but to no effect. Is it a problem because of his size? He is just a partial skeleton now, but the dorfs won't bother moving him. What am I missing? (Yes, I do have a garbage dump activity zone, and vermin remains get dumped there just fine).
3) My fort lacked any metals early on, so I made some fashionable armor out of bones. I tried the "white armor only" trick from the wiki, but they still won't wear it. Is it because the armor got decorated (by the same bonecarver with some shells laying around) or might it be something else?
4) Are rock nuts dropped when the leaves are stuffed into bags? Because my rock nuts stock seem to be rising quite slowly when compared to say, my plump helmet spawn. That has mostly to do with an older fort where I couldn't secure any cattle so I was trying to get some wholesome vegan soap. Despite intense farming, my stock stayed low around 30 (the starting ones plus some I got from a caravan), slowly increasing to maybe 40 in a couple of seasons.

I apologize for the length of my post, but I seem to have this kind of problem with the English language :|
I wish to thank in advance anyone who might want to take a crack at these issues, some are plain annoying...

1: One bed creating the zone over all of them should be fine.
2: Have you checked to see if your dwarves will gather refuse from outside? It's under the (o)rders page.
3: Try going into the military screen and changing them to "replace clothing with armor" or whatever the exact wording is. Just make sure it says "replace" and see if you still have that problem. Also make sure to actually put them into an active squad, sometimes my guys won't get their armor until they actually have an order to do something.
4: I think they do but I could be wrong. Try making a stockpile just for them away from everybody, because your guys can and will eat them raw, even if proper food is available. That could be it.

When you're designating the bedroom, make sure that "dormitory" is set to (y). Otherwise, basically everything at mastahcheese said.

Also, welcome!

1. One bedroom designation over all the beds with it set to "[y]es this is a dormitory" will do, but dwarves get a happy thought from having their own bedroom (even if it overlaps with others) so if you have enough beds to designate bedrooms for everybody then it's not a bad idea.

Rock nuts come from processing quarry bushes.

A note on beds: Dorfs who don't have assigned bedrooms will pretty much lay their heads on any beds that have not been assigned. Including hospital beds, or strangely enough, stockpiled beds.

If you want to prevent healthy dwarves from sleeping in your hospital, your best bet is to give them proper rooms. Don't have to be big ones (3x1 is pretty popular), but it will solve the ' problem'.

And... wait... you can make armor out of bone? How did I not know this? This will solve so many of my problems. :)

Regarding the corpse, are you aware of the difference between a garbage dump and a refuse stockpile? It's quite counterintuitive and can easily be confused.
A refuse stockpile is a normale stockpile (also things may start to rot if in such a stockpile) created with p while a garbage dump is a special zone created with i. If you marked the body with k→d or d→b→d then you marked it to be dumped and it won't be put in a refuse stockpile. If you did not want to dump it you need an appropriate refuse stockpile and set the correct options as someone said before.

You are indeed right, I apologize. I will pay more attention where I post my doubts from now on.

The "dorfs gather refuse from outside" thing worked well, I must thank you. For some reason or another, though, even after I checked and double-checked everything my dwarves will still refuse to wear bone armor. The only guess I can make is it making it decorated somehow affected the outcome: I will try, as soon as I have some bones around, to make them wear undecorated pieces.
Also, the fact that my rock nuts wouldn't skyrocket even with intense farming because my guys would eat them makes a lot of sense now that I think of it.
Thank you all for the feedback, I greatly appreciate it and it spared me some mild headaches.

You might be able to assign specific armor pieces to them, if you haven't tried that yet.

Try this, I always do this, and never have this problem.

In my experience, sleeping areas are beneficial, but not necessary if you have enough "good thought" stuff set up. Still, it's useful to have them centralized in a specific area and can do wonders for morale if they have individual sleeping areas where they can store the stuff they arbitrarily claim ownership of...
