Universal Battle and other tabletop wargame simulators
« on: December 14, 2013, 02:31:44 am »

Just played my first game of Warhammer on UB, and it was fantastic. I'm on the verge of buying an account to get full access to units, but can anyone tell me if there is a better or comparable simulator available?

EDIT: The URL if you're interested. http://www.universalbattle.com/

I plan on giving it a shot later today. Will post my thoughts then. But, i just wanted to say that this looks awesome. One of my biggest issues was finding people who i actually enjoyed playing with, and the cost of the models, books, etc. This eliminates my two biggest problems.

Yeah, I've been collecting Fantasy and 40k for about 15 years and I've probably played less than 20 games of each in that time mainly due to the problems of finding opponents, lack of army completion, time and travel. You pretty much need to dedicate 1/2 of a day to get a decent wargame in. Admittedly I've always been more of a modeller/painter than gamer, but his looks like an amazing opportunity to start developing a sense for the game on a strategic level and developing a tactical approach, as opposed to just pushing the men together and rolling dice.

I checked out Vassal, which is a generic simulator for board games that you plug different mods into. It has a 40k mod which seems like its quite decent and popular. Apparently no fantasy mod yet due to some issues with large unit selection, though a group is working on it. It is free though.

You guys might be interested in checking out MegaMek/MekWars, which are computer versions of the Battletech (giant robots going pewpew) tabletop wargame, possibly with a massive campaign metagame played online :) There's a topic on the subject here. It's not on Vassal or Universal Battle, but it's really easy to get it working :)

It makes playing it so much faster and more interesting than the tabletop version, to me. It does lose the "rolling dice with friends" quality, but instead there is a much more competitive edge to it, which is amazing if you like to optimise moves :)
