Dwarf killed by own traps
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:13:13 am »

I'll work on getting a screenshot hosted if you all really want it, but the low-down on it is one of my own dwarfs got torn to pieces by one of my own weapon traps. This was during a forgotten beast moment, there were webs everywhere and it was a military dwarf.

If there's some weird relationship between webs, weapon traps and dwarfs then we might have a new way of executing the unwanted!

The weapon traps were not hooked up to any special trigger.

This is a known phenomenon. Stunned/webbed creatures temporarily lose any trapavoid status they might otherwise have. It's actually one of the only ways to capture demons, forgotten beasts, titans, and other creatures that normally cannot be caught in a cage trap.

If you've had cave-ins occurring anywhere near cage traps, you might find dwarves locked in cages. I accidentally lost a legendary mason that way once - didn't notice he was in the cage until he died of thirst.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?

I almost atomsmashed a dwarf who fell unconscious from a spear attack.  I almost never check the junk pile before pulling the lever.  Glad I did that time.

It actually can also happen if the dwarf falls asleep on a trap. It's been known to happen. Urist, why.

Oh, that's interesting. I'd heard about web-cages before, but I didn't realise that the reason Dwarves avoided their own traps was because they're trap avoid.

This could have some very obscure and interesting ramifications in the coming version of the game. Toady's already said to be careful when visiting your own fortresses due to the traps you've placed!

Indeed it does. I know that there's no way I would visit any abandoned fortresses of mine in adventure mode if my traps affected me. Simply because I would be unable to get past the trenched border for one reason. And if I did make it to the welcome center, I'd die (just ask any goblin who has attempted to get past the welcome center).

I've had it happen more than once with badly injured dwarves limping back to the fortress.  They pass out along the way, wake up, and then keep moving.  But, if one of those pass outs is on a cage trap...

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

Normally dwarves won't sleep if they are standing on a trap, and would instead eventually go insane from sleep deprivation. However they are free to fall unconscious from pain or syndromes as mentioned above.

I've lost an embarrassing number of forts due to trap-related mishaps.

Water and fall traps are the worst ones.  All it takes is one goblin to make it over the pit before the dwarves can pull the lever and it's all over.

Alternatively, my elaborate drowning-trap-chambers tend to fail for one reason or another.  Oh man, ha ha, I remember this one time, I'd had problems with building destoryers breaking waterwheels (which powered the trap) and curious beasts pulling random levers (which activated the traps at inappropriate times), so I took care to build my latest and greatest trap to cover these flaws.  I put the lever at the top of the water silo, surrounded by cage traps, and walled the water-wheels off so NO ONE can touch them.  I tested the trap, and the water silo started spouting water into the drowning chamber...

...which promptly started overflowing into my fort.

None of the dwarves could reach the lever, because the water kept pushing them away from the silo.  And no one could dismantle the water-wheels, because they were walled off.

My entire fort was below river-level.

It was a monument to stupidity.  It really was.

really! that could be interesting in one of my new fort designs.
