Can thought strings be edited in a mod?
« on: December 06, 2013, 10:10:17 am »

I'm thinking of a mod that would remove the references to alcohol in the game but not change the associated gameplay element, and I'm wondering what to do about the "Needs alcohol to get through the working day" thought. I suppose I could patch string in the Dwarf_Fortress binary but that seems brittle (not that new versions of DF come out that often I suppose).

Also, I should ask if this is a mod that's already been done.

I believe that one thought and dependency on alcohol for living is actually governed by [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] tag or something like that. Check the dwarf entry in raws.

I had considered that, but it isn't really what I want to do. Like I said, I don't want to affect the gameplay.

No. String patching only.

Ah, is this for censorship purposes?

Check out the localization patch.  It lets you edit most of the strings in the game.  It'll probably be obselete by the next DF update but who knows when that'll happen?
