Merchant guard stuck at the edge of the map. What do?

So... while the other merchants have come and gone, this one decided to stay a bit to look at the grass.
I don't think he's going anywhere, so is there some way I can force him to become a fortress citizen? Or leave? Kill him? I don't want the other merchants to stop showing up because of this one guard here.

MAGMAAAAAAAAAAA

Lava, in this particular instance. Apply to either the guard or the next caravan, doesn't matter much.

Lost caravan guards cause no harm. They'll just join the next caravan's escort that enters the map and leave with them.

Edit: Oh, and forgot to mention - the suggestion in the post above is poisonous advice. Guards cannot be memorialised, magma leaves no body and dwarfs will commonly rise as ghosts when they're not buried or have a slab erected in their memory. If you really _want_ an unappeasable ghost, go right ahead, but if for some weird reason you don't, magma's the one thing you should definitely _not_ use on lingering dwarf caravan guards.

DO NOT ATTACK THE GUARD!!!
Caravan guards are (assuming Dwarven) of the same civilization as you. If one of your men attacks them, the attacker will be considered an enemy of the civ (while being a part of it still), which causes other dwarves to attack them, in turn making them enemies of the civ.

My best advice is, with DFHack, hover over them with 'v' and "tweak fixmigrant". What the command does is mark them as being a member of the fort. It commonly happens that someone wants to join your fort, but they were a trader. The game does not properly mark them as not being a merchant anymore, so when they arrive on the map from a wave, they automatically try to guard a caravan.

A guard you say?  Wait for the next siege to arrive.  It'll sort itself.

This isn't a migrant, though - it's a caravan guard that decided, for some reason, to stick around at the map edge instead of leaving with the rest of the traders. I've seen it happen back in 0.31, and possibly in 40d as well.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You can still force them to join your fort, though.
