The comments about gods not being inherently good or evil are interesting, I like it.  And now that I think about it, there is real life precedent; the god of death in the Hindi religion is considered "good".  His domain is death, but also rebirth, renewal, and transformation (and a few other things).

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

I guess this particular god of death just likes corpses, and isn't particularly evil?  But without the good vs evil contrast this fort isn't anything special then.
Maybe it could still be spun, make it "dishonest fortress" where every update lies about what is happening.  The dwarves who don't follow the god of lies get sick of it and go make their own fort.
