Vampire refuses to go to burrow - spams cancel messages
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:56:16 am »

Hi, first message this.

I am fairly new to the game, and I fear I might have a typical newbie problem. Unfortunately my search did not unearth anything which might apply.

I have my very first vampire. Well at least a vampire-victim. As soon as I found the bugger with too long personal history and suspiciously high social skills, I disabled at him all labors, made him manager+bookkeeper and assigned him a nice study. With the idea of walling him in. I also made the room a burrow, and assigned him to the burrow.

But the vampire refuses to go to the burrow. First he continued to stand along the river and fish. Finally he stopped fishing, then he began to spam messages:
Ezum McVampire, manager cancels Store item in Stockpile: Drop-Off inaccessible.

What could be the issue here?

he's got something in his hands that he needs to drop off, probably a fish, and the stockpile isn't inside his burrow, so he can't put it anywhere

keep all his jobs off, remove him from the burrow, let him drop off the fish and put the burrow back on

A burrow doesn't force someone to go there, just forces someone to only do jobs inside that burrow, including dropping off whatever they have in their hands. If that isn't possible, you'll get the cancelation you're seeing.

You don't really need to wall in vampires. I've had forts running with two vampires (my count and my mayor, ironically) for decades without any dwarves drained of blood. I just gave them a burrow that covered everything except the beds in my fort. So long as no dwarf slept anywhere else, neither of them could ever accept a blood-drinking job because none of the jobs were ever in their burrow.

Of course, if you don't want them to do anything but bookkeeping and managing, then walling them in is probably best.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?

Thanks, I will try that.

One more question: A fisherman has gone missing now.  :-[ My vampire suspect is still at his place beside the river. Can a vampire suck dry an active fisher, or might I have a second/different bloodsucker?

Oh, I once dealt with entire family of bloodsuckers. I assure you, there could be another.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

Very likely. The dead dwarf turned up in his bedroom. :-(  >:(
